Hands-On: Xperia X2

Maybe I'm a little jaded after waiting so long for the Xperia X1 only to have it land, look impressive, but fail to make a big impact on the Windows Mobile world. Don't get me wrong - the Xperia X2 is very nice: the build quality is amongst the best of the couple dozen devices I've handled here at CTIA. From the slider to the feel of the keyboard to the subtle curve on the lower-rear of the phone, everything is top-notch.

Not so top-notch, the latest iteration of Sony's Panel's interface. It's awfully pretty and definitely the sort of things you can use to wow your friends and shame your enemies, but only if you're careful to stick with one panel and not switch between your different options, as the lag starting them up is a little disappointing. Perhaps it's time Sony moved beyond the standard 256RAM/512ROM 528MHz Qualcomm processor and into the big time if they're going to try to power interfaces that are this dynamic.

Still, the 480x800 screen and 8mp camera can't help but impress. I can definitely see Sony fans coveting this and I can't blame them for it, the X2 is a very futuristic-looking rig, I just wish the internals we are futuristic as its looks.

Garmin M20 Sighted at 2009 CTIA

With all the excitement about the HTC Snap and Samsung Propel, there are a few more devices making an appearance at the 2009 CTIA. One such phone is the Garmin M20 Nuvifone. It first surfaced at the 2009 Mobile World Congress and made a positive first impression. It is still on track for a late summer release and it will be fun to take this new Windows Mobile phone out for a test drive.

Unwiredview.com was able to get a little hands on time with the M20 during the 2009 CTIA and appears to be equally impressed. The M20 is a GPS enabled Windows Mobile phone that sports a 2.8" VGA touchscreen along with features not uncommon to your average Windows Mobile phone (wifi, bluetooth, 3.0mp camera, etc.). What makes the M20 "not your average Windows Mobile phone" is the GPS. As I understand it, the M20's GPS is a true GPS unit, not aGPS, which means the GPS functionality is not dependent on the cell phone signal. So, if your out hiking and loose your signal, have no fear the M20 will still get you back to civilization.

Follow the break for a hands on video of the Garmin M20.

This week three of our intrepid editors headed out to CTIA 2009 in Las Vegas to catch as much coverage as we could -- and catch it we did. From the Palm Pre emulating the PalmOS to BlackBerry App World to Hands-on time with the Nokia E71x to hands-on time with half a dozen Windows Mobile devices, it's been a pretty crazy week.

It wasn't all Vegas Baby, however. TiPb has been all over the rumors of next-gen iPhone hardware and both the iPhone and Android picked up new document editing capabilities.

You'll find the details on all of that and much more inside as we round up the best of Smartphone Experts!

Who's on board the Windows Marketplace

Microsoft recently touted a list of developers that already are on board for Windows Marketplace for Mobile. Someone the names are familiar. Some we talked to about their plans to join the Marketplace. Other names are a little more obscure.

Who's missing? Obviously scores of other developers, some small, some large. But this is a sure sign that the Marketplace will have some momentum when it's launched later this year.

After the break, we take a quick look at all of the names Microsoft released earlier at CTIA.

Hands-On with the Inventec V112 and its MEMS Display

Posted on Friday, Apr 3, 2009 by Dieter Bohn

Filed Under: News; Tags: mirasol, mems, inventec, ctia09

While most of us are waiting for widespread use of OLED screens on smartphones, there's another little screen technology -- brand name "mirasol" -- that Qualcomm is pushing.  It's based on MEMS and the short version is that it's highly reflective, takes very little power, and is currently monochrome only.

At any rate, Inventec was hiding out at Qualcomm's booth with their v112.  Except for the aforementioned mirasol display, it's your standard Windows Mobile 6.1 GSM slab -- running a custom version of SPB Mobile Shell as a skin.  The mirasol display sits underneath a touch-sensitive area that acts as your 5-day d-pad and displays notifications, current song, or just the date.

Price and availability unclear, but Inventec claims they are hoping for a worldwide launch.  A few more shots below.
