As cell phones get smaller and thinner, Acer apparently has gone against the grain and is launching 3-foot-phones in Singa- ... Wait. This just in. No giant phones. Phew.

But what we do have is a launch event for a slew of new phones in Singapore. It's worth a mention here because we've seen a number of these before, most recently on the floor of Mobile World Congress in Barcelona earlier this year. The initial five either available now or in the near future are the DX900, DX650, X960, F900 and M900.

Also noted by TechieLobang [via BGR] is that Acer is putting the ETEN brand out to pasture.

During the speech, Mr. Roger Yuen mentioned about Acer and its current plan. Plus information of ETEN. Apparently, there will be NO MORE products from ETEN. New handsets will be in the name of ACER. Currently, the Acer Smart Handhelds are designed in Europe, Paris, according to Mr. Yuen.

So there you go. More phones we won't be seeing here anytime soon. And that's a shame.

It's now the Acer DX900, thank you

We've known for a while that a smartphone is coming out under the Acer brand, we just weren't sure when. And we were kind of hoping that it'd be a new phone -- but hoping in the same way you hope that the dude at Dunkin Donuts will give you change for a twenty even though you paid with a ten.

Turns out Acer took the dual-SIM E-TEN Glofiish DX900 and has re-released it as its own. And that's fair, since Acer bought ETEN last year. Look for the Acer DX900 to be released in the United Kingdom by the end of the month. You can pre-order it now.

What does that mean for the Acer news conference on Feb. 16 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona? Probably good things -- that or they'll just remind us that they have these "new" DX900s.  Either way, we'll be there to bring it all to you.  In the meantime we're now hoping Acer has some WM6.5 action in store for us, drinking our coffee, abiding.

Asus and ETEN are similar in that they both are awfully far behind HTC in terms of market share and sheer number of devices they release. They're also similar in that it's relatively difficult to get ahold of their gadgets here in the US. Now they're similar in yet another way, like ETEN before them, Asus has announced they'll be offering WM6 updates for a heap of devices:

A639/A626/A686/A696 and P535/ P735 only

..The updates should hit in July; you also may care that "Terms and conditions apply" -- well, you probably don't care, terms and conditions always apply, don't they?

E-TEN Glofish M700 approved by FCC

FCC approval doesn't necessarily mean we'll see the device coming to these American shores, but let's hope that it does, because this M700 looks to be the first high-end PPC phone to knock HTC off its high horse (not that I have anything against HTC). Thank god I switched to GSM, though I do miss 3G sorely, built-in WiFi and a SiRF III chipset would definitely help blunt that pain.

To recap, you get a plethora of features including Windows Mobile 5.0 (AKU 3.2), quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, 802.11b/g WiFi and that awesome SiRFStar III GPS chipset. You can even avoid that bumper-to-bumper mess thanks to the Traffic Message Channel (TMC). Other goodies include a 2.0 megapixel camera, push email, FM radio, and a Samsung SC3 2442 (400MHz) processor. Too bad there isn't any 3G.

Why the extra "i" in Glofiish? Did they mean to put it up front? At any rate, say hello to this GSM slider PPC with built-in GPS. Availability (or detailed, uh, details) still unknown, but it's a good bet you won't be seeing it in the US especially soon.

The glofiish M700 supports GSM, GPRS and high-speed EDGE for voice and data connectivity almost worldwide, while IEEE802.11b/g support allows users to connect to public and private Wi-FI® networks when in range of suitable hotspots. For travelers, the glofiish M700 also features GPS and TMC functions delivered via an embedded SiRF Star III chipset allowing the glofiish M700 to handle both daily business needs and weekend leisure.
