 Facebook for Windows Phones

Microsoft’s partnership with Facebook keeps getting stronger. Everything from Microsoft’s development tools to Windows Phone 7 Series includes some form of integration with the popular social networking application. Windows Phone users have several different methods of getting to their Facebook accounts from their phones. In addition to their mobile site and SMS integration, the Facebook application for Windows Phones is one of the applications that Microsoft has been pushing hard as a demonstration of what is capable with Windows Mobile 6 based devices.

Facebook 1.2 is now available from the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. If you haven’t played with it before, Facebook for Windows Phones allows you to perform most of the tasks that you are familiar with. Updating your status, sending and receiving messages, and managing and viewing pictures and videos are all simple to do within the application. Also new in the 1.2 update are the ability to comment and "like" posts.

If you haven’t given Facebook for Windows Phones a try, head over to the Marketplace for Mobile and have a look-see.

REVIEW: GPSed, the GPS tracking software for Facebook & MySpace and for tracking your family!

Posted on Wednesday, Jun 10, 2009 by HobbesIsReal

As GPS starts to become more of a standard feature in cell phones we are going to continue to see a lot of new and inventive ways to use it. I have always been a big GPS fan.  I have been using a wide range of different GPS software applications on my cell phone ever since I bought my first Bluetooth enabled WM phone along with a Bluetooth GPS unit 5 years ago. But now with GPS built into so many cell phones, GPS applications are even that much easier to use… and become a lot more affordable with a wider market to sell to.
How would you like to use your GPS on your cell phone to track your trip across the country and have it posted live on the GPSed website (either publically or privately in your own personal GPSed account) or live on Twitter, Facebook, Blogger, or MySpace? Imagine going on a bike trip and you wanted to share your trip with your friends on your Facebook page along with GPS tagged photos along the way and Waypoints (GPS bookmarks) with your own personal summary of any point of interest.
Or do you think it would be cool to be able track any cell phone in your family to see exactly where they are… or send an SMS message to anyone you want with your exact location, even if they do not have a GPS enabled phone, so they can meet right up with you?
All of these promised features are what caught my eye with GPSed. Now I have taken it on the road, I have used it all around town for both work and family and I wanted to share what I found.  Take a peek inside to see if GPSed really does deliver on all these sounds-to-good-to-be-true promises…

Official Facebook app gets bug fixes

Facebook for Windows Mobile

Less than a week after it was officially announced, Microsoft has issued an update to the official Windows Mobile Facebook application. Here's what's fixed, according to the Windows Mobile Team blog:

This version should help anyone that was getting the “cannot install due to insufficient privileges” error and it should also help with some hanging errors.

If you've been having problems with the app, head over to WindowsMobile.com/facebook and try out the update. When you download it, it'll be identified as Facebook_v1.0.0.7p (the old one's just v1.0.0.7.). And here's another tip when upgrading:

You’ll want to uninstall the old application and then make sure that the facebook.vol and fbmail.vol files are deleted from your root directory before reinstalling.

And sure enough, that took care of all of my problems. (The ones I was having with the Facebook app, anyway.) Huzzah!

Official Facebook application released

We've been playing with a couple of early versions of the new Facebook application for Windows Mobile, and now the official release has arrived.

Here's what you'll get:

  • The only Facebook app available that uploads video straight from your phone.
  • You can get status updates, respond to friend requests and photo tags, create wall posts, send messages, update your profile pic – the usual stuff.
  • The app also integrates with Windows Live, allowing you to share photos, updates, etc. with that service.
  • The app also will also be available on Windows Mobile 6.5 "later this year." (Sorry, no dates leaked.)

You can download it directly here, or find out more at WindowsMobile.com/facebook. Windows Mobile 6 or 6.1 only, folks.

Ported Facebook app updated

We're still expecting an official Facebook application come the launch of Windows Marketplace for Mobile, but we've been using the version, er, purloined from a Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM for a while now. It's good stuff.

Noir over at PPCGeeks points out that there's a new version available (0.16 - up from the 0.14 I was using) that for whatever reason is definitely a little more snappy. There's also a version at XDA Developers [via], but I had trouble with that one.

That said, this is highly unofficial and unsupported stuff (hell, the name of the app has changed from Microsoft Facebook to ppcgeeks Facebook - and that's more than a little shady), so be sure to back up your phone first, or just lurk in the thread and see how everyone else is doing.

FacebookIM - another Facebook client

Here's yet another way to hit up your Facebook friends from your phone. This time, it's FacebookIM.

As the name implies, it takes advantage of Facebook's chat services. It also takes advantage of Facebook's mobile site and also lets you upload photo and video directly.

This one comes to us from XDA Developers member blutz. Hit that up for more info, and check out the developers' site here.

Facebook app ported from Windows Mobile 6.5

The crazy cats at XDA Developers are at it again, this time stripping the native Facebook application out of a Windows Mobile 6.5 ROM. [via]

The port works on just about all resolutions, says XDA's jug6ernaut, though there are a couple of niggles:

  • Can't be installed to the storage card.
  • May have issues if not on a WWE ROM.
  • Log-in information will not be saved if you choose "log-out," though it will be saved if you close with an "X" button from a third-party app.
  • Won't see IDs if they're not one of your friends.
  • First launch can take a while to cache info.

The App's running fine on my Motorola Q9h, but you'll get a much better experience if you've got a screen deeper than 240 pixels, and it's fairly obvious the app's built for touchscreen phones. Go check it out here, but remember that this isn't (yet) official or anything, so be forewarned.

More pics after the break.

Review: SkyBook Facebook application

SkyBook

It’s no secret that Web browsing within Windows Mobile usually isn’t the most enjoyable experience. For that reason, we often turn to standalone applications to do the job. Earlier this year we took a brief look at Facebook application Snap2Face by Magnifoca. As 2008 closes out, Snap2Face has had a major upgrade, a new name and new features.

So join us after the break for a look at SkyBook, and why this free standalone application is a viable alternative to the mobile Web version of Facebook.

Snap2Face for Windows Mobile: A Better Facebook App?

Posted on Tuesday, Jul 8, 2008 by Nick Gebhardt

pc_capture1.pngIf FreindMobilizer isn’t your cup of tea you should try Snap2Face. Snap2Face is another application for Windows Mobile that has sprouted up in the recent Facebook frenzy. For some reason or another I just couldn’t get FreindMobilizer to register with my Treo 750 so I decided to give Snap2Face a try, and man was it worth it!

Snap2Face does the little things like contact synchronization, photo uploading, and a great interface that these other apps don’t have. Some other features include the ability to set status while on the go, view friends status, view friends’ friends, and good old fashion poking.

I think this is a great app that has some potential to end up on a lot of Windows Mobile devices. From my trial of four days I can attest that it’s very easy to use and at times addicting. Some improvements that could be made are notifications on screen, syncing in the background instead of having to refresh, and faster photo uploading. Other than that I believe Snap2Face will be a hit because of its beautiful interface. Well that and the fact that it’s completely free. It does use heavy data so make sure you have an unlimited media plan before you get to Facebooking.
