Sprint Touch Pro: Hands On and Video

Sure, we just fed you the specs on the HTC Touch Pro on Sprint earlier today when it was officially announced, but they bear repeating: A WM6.1 slider with a 640x480 screen, EVDO, WiFi, 1340mAh battery, Opera 9.5, 512mb RAM and 288mb ROM, microSD for expansion, and a 3.2mp camera all make the Touch Pro the Touch Pro. Above, just a very quick little video of the new device.

So should you drop your $299.99 (after rebates) on October 19th? Well, we can't exactly tell you that, but we can give you our initial hands-on impressions and a photo gallery after the break.

No surprises here, folks, just good news confirming what we all knew: Sprint will, in fact, be the first US carrier to officially carry the new hotness from HTC. Coming up first is the HTC Diamond in “September” for $249.99 after $100 mail-in rebate and a 2 year contract (we still expect it next week). That same contract and rebate also applies to the Touch Pro, which will clock in at $299.99 afterwards and be available October 19th.

So yeah, exactly what we were expecting, but good to see there wont be an surprises. Although we all know exactly what the specs and looks of the Diamond will be (thanks, Telus!), the Pro's CDMA flavor has been a little cagier. No more:

  • 4.01“ x 2” x .71“
  • 2.8 inch display with 640 x 480 resolution
  • 512 MB ROM, 288 MB RAM (ships with a 1gb microSD card too)
  • 1340mAh battery good for 3.75 hours of talk time
  • 3.2 Megapixel camera with flash
  • Included software is all the usual suspects: TouchFLO 3D, Office, Sprint Navigation, Opera 9.5, etc. One new bit: a business card scanner.

WMExperts is at CTIA today, assuming either Sprint or HTC has these mamma-jammas on the floor, we'll bring you the hands-on.

Other Black Slab news: Touch Pro gets priced and a date (it was lonely)

And speaking of trendy black slabs, HTC's much anticipated and feature packed Touch Pro has been picked up by Expansys.com for a expected release date of August 4th.

Hey, that's pretty close.

But sit down for the price. Thanks to our awesomely weak economy and dollar, this puppy will set you back just over $1k ($1,047.38 to be exact).

Yikes.

Perhaps if you're a CDMA user, you'd best sit back and wait for the U.S. debut, which we're hearing will be around December on Sprint.

Hack Away at TouchFLO 3D

Most of us aren't quite able to play around with TouchFLO 3D yet as it's only available on the HTC Diamond and the Touch Pro (we're still crossing our fingers for September, by the way). However when we do get our hands on TouchFLO 3D goodness, it looks like we'll be able to hack away. The fine folks at Pocketnow have a couple of posts detailing some settings you can change up.

  • The first is reordering the TouchFLO tabs to something that makes a little more sense for your workflow.
  • The 2nd isn't TouchFLO per say, but instead details the settings you'll need to change in order to make the Diamond's 'zoom wheel' (that's right, it doesn't scroll, it zooms) work in applications not titled “Opera” or “Outlook.” It's registry-riffic, so save it for later.

Meanwhile, feel free to kick back and ogle our first look at the Diamond and dream about the CDMA version we're expecting. It's going to be a great fall, folks.

Verizon to Get Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, 800w

SQUEEEE! We have a confirmed report that our hunch was right, the HTC Touch Diamond (see our video review here) and the HTC Touch Pro are coming to the US in CDMA flavors; What's more, they won't be stuck in purgatory Sprint-land either. The evidence comes courtesy of a Verizon Roadmap leaked to PhoneArena (by way of TreoCentral). As usual, they'll be showing up on Verizon under the UTStarcom moniker, which means there's a greater than 50/50 chance they'll drop the cool names for something like XV720957298 or whatever.

Oh, the roadmap also reveals that big V will get the Treo 800w.

ETAs, prices, ...pretty much every other detail you want are still unknown.

Update: It's doesn't hurt that the Touch Pro in CDMA flavor was just approved by the FCC, either.

Thanks to Jennifer for the tip!

HTC Raphael / Touch Pro: New Picture and Specs

HTC Raphael

In our forums, Surur finds some specs and a new photo of the HTC Raphael [from GSM Help Desk]. It's due to be released as the T-Mobile MDA Vario IV in Europe, sometime during “2nd quarter 2008”.

Size:103 x 52 x 18 millimeters
Weight:158 grams
Maximum talk time:300 minutes / Maximum standby time:320 hours
Display resolution: 480 x 640 pixels
Network support: GSM 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz
Speed processor: 528 MHz
Internal memory: 256 MB RAM / 512 MB ROM mem.
Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, FM Radio
Camera 3.2 megapixel

Since this is Tri-Band GSM, it's not going to be a US Release. We're actually expecting that, like with the original HTC Touch, the Raphael / Touch Pro is going to be making its first appearance stateside in a CDMA flavor on Sprint. Still - it won't be long now!

Thanks, Surur! Update: And POW, it's been announced.
