TellMe ripped from Sprint Intrepid, runs OK on other Windows phones

Posted on Monday, Oct 26, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

Most of us running Windows Mobile 6.5 have been more than a bit disappointed that Microsoft'S TellMe service has been omitted from the OS, unless you're using a Sprint Samsung Intrepid.

Of course, it only was a matter of time before TellMe was stripped from the Intrepid ROM by pixelwix at PPCGeeks and set free for all to enjoy. That said, things are a bit buggy, as this is far from an official release. Touchscreen functions are missing. Some users say they can't even get it to load. So ymmv. And it looks like you need to have .netCF 3.5 installed first.

So if you're in the impatient type, hit up the link below and give it a go.

Review: Sprint Samsung Intrepid (sph-i350)

Sprint’s first official Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional phone is the Samsung Intrepid, a front-qwerty CDMA/GSM world phone with WiFi. It was released on Oct. 11 and fetches for $149 with a 2-year contract. (See our earlier hands-on).

We’ve played with the device for the last 10 days and have reached our conclusion: it ain’t terrible, but it’s not the best. Samsung basically nailed some aspects but goofed on others and the device feels quite underwhelming.

On the other hand, for the price, perhaps that’s the point.

After the break, read our full review with lots of pics and even a video mini-review for those tight on time.

Sprint Intrepid

As seen in Malatesta's hot little hands, the Sprint Intrepid is now available online for $149.99 after rebate and two-year contract. Windows Mobile 6.5 is on board, as are the usual Sprint goodies. Along with that you get the 320x240 touchscreen, 3.2MP camera, WiFi b/g, plus it's a world phone.

Microsoft's Tellme app demoed on the Sprint Intrepid

We're still not entirely sold on the whole voice command thing when it comes to mobile phones (though admittedly it's very helpful while driving). But you've gotta admit Microsoft's Tellme service (whose purchase allowed Windows Mobile to put the old Voice Command out to pasture) looks pretty compelling. Sure, it's a few extra steps to do basic functions, so it's probably not something we'd use while walking down the street. But it absolutely would be handy in a car, and you have to admit the speech-to-text is pretty cool.

Sprint Samsung Intrepid hands-on

Here was the big surprise today! The Sprint Samsung Intrepid is basically the Jack but for CDMA.

The keyboard was pretty good on it, though there is no space between the keys, so it is a bit cramped. The screen is a bit odd at that resolution, but it seems to work. The Start menu has four rows, allowing it a lot to fit on the screen.

The device was speedy to use and seemed like a nice middle of the road front-facing QWERTY device. Will it beat out a Treo Pro? Tough call, but I do like the minimalist look of the Treo Pro better. Still, this seems like a compelling device and Samsung has been quite successful with this line so far.

This particular Windows phone will be available Oct. 11 on Sprint.

More pics after the jump!

Sprint Samsung Intrepid

For those of you waiting on the follow-up to the Samsung Ace, it looks like it's on it's way. The Boy Genius Report scored a Sprint rebate sheet that shows the Samsung Intrepid, believed to be the Ace's sequel. Rumored specs are a 528MHz processor, 3MP camera, CDMA and GSM radios for world capability, WiFi, aGPS and 512MB ROM/256MB RAM. The QWERTY keyboard and QVGA screen also are on board, natch.

As for pricing and availability? Gonna have to wait on those.
