HP has produced several Windows Mobile products over the years. From the iPAQ and Jornada PDA's to the iPAQ Windows Mobile phones they have created a bit of history with the Microsoft operating system. HP hopes to continue its strong history with Windows Mobile with the Glisten

Announced a few weeks ago, the Glisten is a front-facing QWERTY keyboard, touch screen Windows phone is available through AT&T as well as directly from HP.  We had an opportunity to take a pre-production model of the Glisten out for a test drive and found it to a nice phone.

To see how nice it is, follow the break.

HP iPAQ Glisten on AT&T

Good news for those of you patiently waiting for the HP iPAQ Glisten: It's now available online for $179.99 after the usual contract and rebate stuff. Doesn't look like it's in stores yet, so you can't make fun of its name to its face yet. [AT&T via Mobility Site]

AT&T iPAQ Glisten

Everybody remember that HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian with AT&T specs that surfaced in Asia earlier this year? It's now officially the iPAQ Glisten on AT&T.

And glisten it does, with an AMOLED touchscreen, Windows Mobile 6.5, a 3.1MP camera and all the usual bells and whistles, including WiFi and GPS.

The Glisten will be available "in the coming weeks" (grrrrr) for $229.99 (before $50 "promotion card") along with the standard two-year deal. A little pricey, yeah, but so are AMOLED screens.

Full presser after the break.

iPAQ K3 Obsidian passes FCC - next stop, AT&T

iPAQ K3 Obsidian

If for some reason seeing pictures of the HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian with AT&T branding wasn't enough to convince you that some fresh Windows Mobile Standard fare was on its way, let us present Exhibit B. Straight from the Federal Communications Commission (you guys rock!) comes the latest proof. The telltale 850MHz and 1900MHz bands are there, plus, as you can see, there's a AT&T SKU number of the FCC label, so ...

A reminder on the specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6.5
  • 2.46-inch AMOLED touchscreen at 320x240 pixels.
  • Qualcomm 7200A processor @ 528MHz
  • 256MB RAM/512MB ROM
  • GPS
  • 3.2MP camera
  • WiFi b/g.

Might this be one of the new Windows phones we see on Oct. 6?

AT&T's HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian in the flesh

HP iPAQ K3 "Obsidian"

Whoa. Welcome back, iPAQ. What you see here is the HP iPAQ K3 "Obsidian," which has made an appearance in Vietnam a couple of months after we first learned of its existence. VNExpress has it that this Windows Mobile 6.5 phone sports a 2.46-inch AMOLED touchscreen at 320x240 pixels, a Qualcomm 7200A processor @ 528MHz, 256MB RAM/512MB ROM, GPS, 3.2MB camera and WiFi b/g. So, things have been upgraded since we saw the early leaked specs.

As you can see, this one's branded for AT&T and, yes, there's a stylus. Assuming that the keyboard holds up, and it at least looks solid from here, this could well be a triumphant return for HP and the iPAQ line.

A couple more pictures after the break, and a whole bunch more at VNExpress. (And, er, apologies for Google's, um, translation.)

Welcome back, HP, and the iPAQ K3

HP iPAQ K3 Obsidian

From the same massive AT&T leak Engadget scored and from which we learned of the plans for the HTC Touch Pro 2 and Touch Diamond 2 comes more exciting news — the return of HP to the U.S. mainstream.

The iPAQ K3 (codenamed Obsidian) repotedly would be a 2.8-inch flush touchscreen phone (but wouldn't come with a stylus). It'd sport quad-band EDGE and tri-band 3G, with roughly the same Qualcomm processor as the HTC Snap. But it goes one better on the memory side, with 512MB of ROM and 256MB of RAM (compared to the Snap's 256/192). There's WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0 and an honest-to-goodness 3.5mm headset jack.

We're still a little iffy on the age of these slides, and thus the launch date is still kind of up in the air. But Windows Mobile 6.5 is listed as the one and only operating system (and also as the browser, but we'll let that go), so we wouldn't expect it before fall, at the earliest.

But that said, this could well be the messaging monster we've been hoping for for some time now. And the inclusion of a 3.5mm headset jack is going to make the difference for a lot of people. So, welcome back, HP. Good to see ya.

HP reportedly snags former Palm senior director

Might HP be getting some new blood in its smartphone end of things? Electronista has it that former Palm exec Jonathan Oakes on his LinkedIn profile lists a move to HP's Emerging Businesses Unit, which includes iPAQs as well as other mobile work.

That's all we've got to go on, and admittedly it isn't much. But it would be nice to see HP step up its game, particularly in the United States, where's it's gotten no love of late from any of the major carriers. HP did release a couple of phones recently, but we were mostly unimpressed considering you have to compare them to HTC's wares. (And you do. That's just the way it is now.)

Anyway, here's hoping for good things from HP in the future.

Pre-order iPaq Data Messenger

We were largely underwhelmed when we got our hands on the iPaq Data Messenger earlier this month at CES. The hardware was solid, but there just wasn't much else there to make us want it over, say, the HTC Touch Pro. And it's still not seeing any carrier love here in the U.S. As a refresher, here's what's under the hood.

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
  • 2.8-inch 320x240 touchscreen
  • Dimensions: 5.7 x 1.74 x 11.4 cm
  • 128 megs RAM, 256 megs ROM.
  • WiFi (b/g)
  • Standard slider keyboard
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR
  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900), the European flavors of HSDPA (900/1900/2100 MHz)
  • aGPS
  • 3.1MP camera with 5x digital zoom and LED flash.
  • 1140 mAh battery.
  • Micro USB for sync and charge.
  • Micro SD card, up to 8 gigabytes.

If you just have to have one, you can now pre-order it from HP for the low, low price of about $600 (US).

Vodafone releases HP Voice Messenger

It’s been almost a year since we first hear about this phone (aka the Silver), and now the HP Voice Messenger has made its debut on Europe’s Vodafone network. [via Brighthand] Here’s what we’re looking at:

  • HP iPAQ Voice Messenger Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard.
  • 528 MHz Qualcomm 7201A Processor
  • 2.4-inch 320x240 screen.
  • 20-key alphanumeric/qwerty keypad.
  • 900/1900/2100 and 850/900/1800/1900 radios.
  • aGPS.
  • WiFi b/g.
  • Bluetooth 2.0 w/EDR.
  • Weight: 107 grams.
  • Dimensions: 5.0x1.36x11.4 centimeters.
  • 256 megs ROM/128 megs RAM.
  • 1260 mAh removable battery.
  • 3.1MP camera with flash.

All in all, a pretty good offering from HP. Vodafone’s offering it (on contract) for $125 (U.S.), all the way down to free. Off-contract is looking close to $500 (U.S.).

Brighthand also notes that the Voice Messenger’s cousin, the slider/front keypad iPAQ Data Messenger (that was the Oak), is still in the “Coming Soon” stage.

We’ll note that these are two pretty solid devices from HP. Not the best of what’s around, but solid nonetheless. The question remains whether U.S. carriers will ever give HP another shot to go against the new hotness from HTC, Sony Ericsson and, yes, even Palm.

Updated: HP unveils a pair of new phones

Posted on Tuesday, Oct 21, 2008 by Phil Nickinson

As promised by Dieter on our Twitter feed, here are a couple of new offerings from HP which have been dubbed "The Beauty and the Beast."

HP ipaq Voice Messenger (left) and DataManager First up is the Ipaq Data Messenger (that's it on the right). Here are the deets, in handy bullet point fashion:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
  • 2.8-inch 320x240 touchscreen
  • Dimensions: 5.7 x 1.74 x 11.4 cm
  • 128 megs RAM, 256 megs ROM.
  • WiFi (b/g)
  • Standard slider keyboard
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR
  • Quad-band GSM (850/900/1800/1900), the European flavors of HSDPA (900/1900/2100 MHz)
  • aGPS
  • 3.1MP camera with 5x digital zoom and LED flash.
  • 1140 mAh battery.
  • Micro USB for sync and charge.
  • Micro SD card, up to 8 gigabytes.

Here's the new hotness: Instead of a standard D-pad or trackball, there's an optical sensor (as opposed to an "optical mouse", we guess) that offers "gliding" optical control.

Also released is the Ipaq Voice Messenger. You get mostly the same specs as above, sans touchscreen, the full keyboard is replaced by a 20-key alphanumeric, the screen is a tad smaller at 2.4 inches diagonal (though the resolution is the same) and the batter is a little smaller at 1260 mAh.

Note that these are about on par with the HP Silver and Oak that we've previously reported on.

WM Poweruser via JK On the Run

Update: Engadget Mobile has spied the Vodafone details. Off-contract, the DataMessenger will run $677, and the Voice Messenger is $565 (yes, we know they don't use dollars in Europe). Also check out the hands-on video in which you can see the optical sensor in action.
