Over at pocketables, Jenn K Lee has posted up a comprehensive comparison of the most popular browsers on Windows Mobile. She obviously wanted to eliminate variables like whether or not a given device's power would get in the way, so she used a beefy HTC Advantage X7501 to compare Opera 8.65, IE Mobile, Minimo 0.2, Picsel 1.0.0, and NetFront 3.4. The results surprised me a bit and actually got me to change my default browser to her winner.

Oh, you thought I was going to ruin the fun and tell you the winner? Nope. Go check out the smackdown yourself.

A sidenote: WMExperts is at the CTIA Entertainment conference this week, so expect tragically desolate spaces of not-posting interspersed with glorious liveblogging and hands-on posts.

Mozilla Serious about Mobile

Mobile Firefox anyone? That's seems to be what's on the Mozilla team's mind - and not just some stripped-down version, either, but full-fledged Firefox, plugins and all. Ok, it's not actually Firefox, but it will be based on Gecko and share many features. This looks to be a real competitor to Mobile Safari on the iPhone - full browsing. This also means that Mozilla is killing off Minimo - the little gecko-engine that couldn't. Couldn't work with anything resembling speed and stability in my testing of it, I mean.

For a gear-head like myself, full Firefox on Windows Mobile is akin to the second coming of a messiah. Only, you know, without the fire and brimstone - just a T-Rex icon. The glorious event will happen sometime next year.

People ask us all the time about what Mozilla's going to do about the mobile web, and I'm very excited to announce that we plan to rock it. Here's some information about what we're planning to do with hiring, technology, partnerships, and products, and how you can get involved. Short summary: we are serious about bringing the Firefox experience and technology to mobile devices.

Two exciting bits of browser news to share today. Minimo, the Mozilla-based browser for Windows Mobile, has been updated to 0.2. That's a tiny version number, but it's not a tiny set of features you'll get. The previous version of Minimo was well-nigh unusable (for me, anyway), so I hope this one is better. Check it out: Minimo project page

We also get a new version of another alternative browser: Opera. You can download a trial here, but it'll die on June 1st or within a set time period, whichever comes first. Get browsing!
