Hands On With the Motorola Q11

Sure, the Motorola Q11 isn't going to rock your world anytime soon (heck, unless you live in South America, it's unlikely to show up in your world at all), but it's worth one last look.  If Moto really is serious about getting out of the Windows Mobile business, we need to get as much of their front-facing QWERTY goodness in front of us as we can.

The Q11, as you may recall from its official launch, is an EDGE-only handset with GPS and WiFi thrown in on the side, meant primarily for South America.  Hardware-wise, it pretty much feels like the Moto Q9c -- though we'll admit to being slightly jealous of the 3 megapixel camera.

The Q line -- we still like it.  There aren't enough WinMo standard QWERTYs out there -- the BlackJack II and the Q9 series are pretty much it for North America.  Given how popular the form factor really is, it's going to be a long wait for that Maple to arrive.

More photos after the break -- 11 of them, to be precise.  Ahem.

Motorola Q11: 3G not making the cut?

Our friends over at WmPoweruser.com have discovered more details on the Motorola Q11. While Motorola is maintaining several features of the Q line such as the larger keypad, thin form factor and quality screen, they have apparently has cut 3G connectivity from the feature list. It is reported that Motorola has added Wi-Fi, a 3.5mm headphone jack, GPS with turn-by-turn software, and a 3mp camera.

The lack of 3G might jeopardize the chances of the Q11 hitting AT&T’s shelves but should improve the Q11’s battery life for those who can live without the speedy connection. WMPoweruser.com reports that the phone will be manufactured in Brazil where it is expected to be released first (and maybe, heck, it will be released only there?)

Motorola Q9h Silver: Firmware Updates Over the Air, and More on the Q9 Series

Yesterday, when we reported on the Motorola Q11 images, we mentioned that we had some surprising Q9 news. It turns out that our initial dubious reaction to the Dapper Q9h Silver with Pinstripes wasn't really fair -- we got some hints about it during our hands-on at CTIA and arranged to find out what the real deal was with Motorola.

Well, now we know, and what we know is that the Silver Q9h is significantly better than the standard Q9h it's replacing. After the break, find out what's new on the Silver Q9h. Hint: it's there in the title and it's a capital B Big capital D Deal for Windows Mobile.

Also, we explain why on earth Motorola created the EDGE-only Q9e and try our best to lay out all the different versions of the Q9 without the aid of an Excel spreadsheet. Read on!

Motorola Q11 Live Shots

Picture 3-18 Picture 2-38

When WMExperts first broke the story on this mysterious upcoming Q back in March we guessed they'd call it the Q10. We suppose a 6 month delay is worth adding another digit to the end of it: witness the Q11. It's nice to see a real device instead of a cap grabbed from a promotional video.

So now we know that Q11 bit at the Bluetooth SIG site was for real. Mobility Today grabbed some shots:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard (non-touch screen)
  • Bluetooth, WiFi
  • GSM Radio
  • GPS
  • 3 megapixel camera with flash

We're also looking at a pretty chinsy-looking main button board, a screen that doesn't look any better than 320x240, and fewer buttons than I have on my Q9h. Heck, it doesn't even look significantly thinner. Motorola: the added WiFi is nice, but unless you've got another surprise hidden in here, we're wondering why you bothered. Wouldn't it be better to push out the Atilla and the Alexander, and then move on to pushing out a WM device that's actually competitive with what HTC is putting out?

One last Q bit: we got a chance to speak with Motorola late last week about the Pinstripe Silver Q9h and it turns out there's a big surprise in that dapper package -- stay tuned for more on that tomorrow!
