Fix for SMS syncing bug with Microsoft My Phone

A few days ago we reported that a new version of Microsoft's My Phone was available.  Unfortunately, for some,  it also introduced a new bug: the inability to sync your SMS messages (something Tiger Woods would be happy about).

Luckily, a registry fix has been found:

  • Go o HKLM\Software\Microsoft\My Phone
  • Change the registry value “DisableSMSDataType” from “1″ to “0″

Seems easy enough and we're sure someone can .cab this up if you don't feel like touching your registry (though see our guide on the how-to for a quick primer).

By the way, sound off in comments if you experienced this bug. On our custom ROM, we never saw this and this "fix" wasn't pre-installed.

My Phone gets a maintenance update: v1.05.2317.0400

If you're like us flashing your ROM numerous times a day, you rely on My Phone quite a bit.

Just checking it now and we were notified of a mandatory update which bumped us to v1.05.2317 (previous was 1.05.2128).

Unfortunately, no new features are noticeable at this time and performance seem as good as ever.  And the My Phone Team Blog is silent, as usual.

So anyhoo, grab yourself the update via Marketplace or just launch your current version to get it.  Let us know in the comments if you noticed any improvements or if things got worse (cough, Bing, cough).

Microsoft re- launches MyPhone

Posted on Tuesday, Oct 6, 2009 by George Ponder

Microsoft's My Phone has been in open beta for several months now. With today's Windows Mobile 6.5 launch, My Phone emerges with a few new features.

For those not familiar with My Phone, it is a mostly (details in a second) free, over-the-air backup system for your Windows phone. According to Microsoft, My Phone "is a service that helps users organize information, back up data and share information more easily between the Web and Windows phones."

With the official launch of My Phone, Microsoft has added a few more features to the service beyond being a backup system. Follow the break for information on My Phone as well as the new features.

Tomorrow's the day. After months and months of waiting after Windows Mobile 6.5 was announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Microsoft's work comes to fruition, with a massive worldwide launch of the new operating system, new phones, and new (or not so new) services from Microsoft.

We'll be there live in New York City for the whole shebang, so be sure to check in Tuesday morning. In the meantime, join us after the break for a brief primer of what we're expecting.

Microsoft My Phone

Heads up, all you My Phone users out there. The service will be offline starting at 8 a.m. EDT Monday through sometime Tuesday morning while Microsoft upgrades the service.

From the My Phone blog:

On October 5th, 2009 at 5AM (Pacific Daylight Time) (check your local time here) the Microsoft My Phone service will be unavailable while we upgrade the service. The service will come back online on October 6th, 2009 Tuesday morning PDT. Stay tuned for more information. You can also follow us on http://twitter.com/msmyphone for updates.

We're expecting My Phone to play a big part in the Oct. 6 Super Duper Windows Mobile 6.5 launch day events, so an upgrade outage is not expected. Stay tuned, folks.

My Phone's locate/wipe feature may have per-use fee attached

My Phone backup

Here's an interesting tidbit about Microsoft's My Phone sync service, which is still in beta but will go mainstream as part of the Oct. 6 Super Duper Windows Mobile 6.5 launch day. According to this pic posted on Twitter by I Started Something's @longzheng, a fee "may apply" if you need to "locate a lost phone on a map, remotely lock it or wipe it clean" using My Phone.

The reasoning behind that? Your guess is as good as ours at the moment. Maybe it's to prevent overuse. Maybe it's to prevent abuse. Maybe it's just a pain to do. Anybody have a better idea?

Video: Touch Diamond 2 with WinMo 6.5

HTC Touch Pro 2 with Windows Mobile 6.5

Here's 10 minutes from The Inquirer of Windows Mobile 6.5 running on the — ahem, Windows phone — known as the HTC Warhawk, aka the Touch Diamond 2. [via Engadget Mobile]

For the most part, it's nothing we haven't seen, despite the phone running what purportedly is the final build of Windows Mobile 6.5. But we do get a good (albeit brief) look at the Windows Marketplace for Mobile, a nice run-through of Microsoft My Phone (which we've been enjoying for a while now).

Speaking of My Phone, the interview drops a line that My Phone will be a part of Live Mesh at some point, and that there may be a premium buy-in for more storage.

Microsoft Tag is included on the ROM, which makes sense if you're serious about pushing that standard. We also get a good look at Flash running on the latest version of Internet Explorer.

Peep the whole video after the break.

Microsoft My Phone now an open beta

That little maintenance outage Microsoft My Phone underwent? Turns out it was an update to the Web portal. And alongside that will come an update to the phone client.

Oh, and the service is moving to an open beta. From the My Phone Team blog [via]:

With today’s release, we’re opening the beta to all users -- no more waiting list or promotional codes!

Can't put it any more plainly than that. So if you're looking for a way to sync your contacts, photos, text messages and more to the cloud and didn't get in on the closed beta, head on over to myphone.microsoft.com and give it a shot.

Expect My Phone outages today

For all you users of Microsoft's My Phone sync service, things may be a little spotty today.

The My Phone service will be not be available on May 18 to enable deployment of a service upgrade.  During this maintenance period, you will be unable to access the My Phone web site or to sync your phone with the service.  We apologize for any inconvenience.

Hang in there, folks. This, too, shall pass.
