Original Sprint Touch Pro gets ROM update; Snap gets boot-up hotfix

For those of you rocking the original HTC Touch Pro on Sprint, and we know there are plenty of you out there, an official ROM update was recently released. Here's what you get:

  • TouchFlo 3D updated to improve speed and stability.
  • Dialer application enhanced to improve the handling of incoming calls.
  • Resolves an issue using the “r” and “w” keys on the virtual keypad.
  • Improves contact searching performance.
  • Includes a variety of minor bug fixes.

This is a full-on ROM update, so be sure to back up all of your important data first because the device will be wiped in the process.

Also, HTC has released a hotfix for the Sprint Snap that "is designed to correct and prevent a memory block issue that can cause the Sprint Snap to lock up or freeze during boot up."

This one's merely a hotfix, like loading an app. That means your data should be safe (though we'd recommend a backup first, just in case), and you'll need to reload this fix should you ever hard-reset the Snap.

A closer look at the HTC Fuze ROM update

The on-again, off-again ROM Update for the AT&T Fuze seems to have stabilized with fewer "Oh No! 404" errors popping up when you go to it's download link. Having had success at downloading the update and avoiding the dreaded error messages, we have installed the update on the Fuze and while the new update started a little rocky, things settled down and liked what we have found.

We promise no "404" errors are present after the break, only our observations on the updated ROM.

On again-off again Fuze update is on again (for now)

Last week we told you about HTC releasing a ROM update for the AT&T Fuze and before the ink on the website could dry, the update was mysteriously replaced with a server error.  Rumors for the link going dead ranged from there was a problem with the S/N entry field to the update contained too much Windows Mobile 6.5 to simple driver errors.

We checked in on the URL just a minute ago and the update is live again.  The download instructions are all laid out by HTC and the features of the update haven't changed from our first report.  You're still required to enter a valid serial number and HTC is using the same link for the 146mb update file.

Just in case you've misplaced it, you can get the Fuze ROM update here.

Update: Yeah, it's down again. Sorry, folks. We were able to snag the update earlier today.

Updated Update: Two minutes ago, the site was back up.  It may be a result of heavy traffic, HTC having technical problems or a sinister webmaster teasing us.  If you get the "Oh No! 404" error, try back later and the update should be available.

As mentioned, we were able to get the update before the site disappeared and have installed the updated ROM.  So far, not much different than the Test ROM that leaked earlier this year.

Brings better touch response.

  • A quicker media panel.
  • Better texting.
  • Brigher keyboard.
  • You should get much better performance and a better signal, too.

The update, dubbed R3, is only available at the Sony Ericsson update service.

HTC Fuze ROM Update Becomes Official

Looks like HTC has released an update for the AT&T Fuze. According to the HTC Support site, here's what's included:

  • Microsoft's Windows Mobile Adaptation Kit Update (AKU) 1.4.6
  • Slide to Answer
  • Push To Talk Button is now re-assignable
  • FM Radio Application
  • Enhanced MS Voice Command
  • Call waiting indicator is now audible when using Speakerphone
  • HTC Music player supports Album art/info
  • Improved TouchFlo3D (TF3D) and User Interface performance
  • A-GPS Update: Speeds up the time it takes the GPS to get a fix on your location
  • Quick GPS is still recommended for the optimal operation of GPS based applications and services

Based on the features, it looks like a polished version of the Test ROM that leaked a few months ago. HTC does a good job walking you through the update process and we'll concur with HTC's recommendation that you really need to back up your data before you update the ROM. The update can be found here.

UPDATE: As many have noticed, the ROM download page is no longer available. According to some of the comments over at FuzeMobility, it looks like the S/N requirement was not supposed to have happened and HTC is modifying things.  Hopefully the updated ROM will be available soon.

Unofficial ROM unlocks Omnia GPS

A new "unofficial" ROM for the Samsung Omnia has made its way into wild at MoDaCo [via BGR], promising to unlock some sought-after features. Currently available in the U.S. from Verizon Wireless, the Omnia's GPS chip has been locked down, much to the chagrin of, well, everyone. Out of the box, you're forced to use VZ Navigator for all of your GPS needs. But using this ROM, update you should be able to use free third-party apps like Google Maps and Live Search.

Other changes in addition to the GPS unlock are:
  •  5 percent battery increments
  • Ability to disable threaded text messaging via system settings
  • Pop-up keyboard keys a la iPhone
  • Auto-lock keypad settings now include Off, 2s and 5s
  • Opera Mobile 9.5 build 15679
  • Weather Bug and Windows Live Widgets
  • Favorite settings, now known as easy settings
  • Windows Live

If you are brave, let us know how it works after the update. But by all means, back up your data first, and read through the thread at MoDaCo. This is unofficial stuff, so be careful.

And while this unofficial fix is nice, we're still waiting for that official, open GPS unlock that Verizon said was coming. How 'bout it, guys? (fwiw: A BGR commenter says official GPS unlocks are coming May 11.)

Leaked: AT&T Update Test ROM

We've heard about HTC's updated ROM for the Touch Diamond and the Touch Pro last week and not to be left out, we're seeing signs that AT&T won't be too far behind with an update for the HTC Fuze. FuzeMobility.com is reporting that a leaked copy of a Test Fuze ROM has surfaced over at XDA Developers. In the discussion over at XDA one member reports the new ROM has added the FM Radio Player to the Fuze, has a slide to answer canvas, video share's performance has improved, and you can remap the PTT button. Speculation has the "official" release of this update coming from AT&T in a few weeks.

Keep in mind that this will erase everything on your Fuze before it installs the new ROM so it is important you have your data backed up.  This is a test ROM and may/may not have issues internally or with other applications.  It is carrier specific and may conflict if loaded on a Touch Pro.

Follow the break for a list of the technical changes/fixes the test ROM presents.

AT&T Tilt 6.1 Upgrade Coming August 26th

The wait for Windows Mobile 6.1 for the AT&T Tilt continues. We already know that it's coming soon, since we already reported that the download page is up, but it points to an already existing, Windows Mobile 6 ROM. Annoying

Good news is the wait is nearly over -- an anonymous tipster tells us that we can expect the 6.1 ROM for the Tilt to officially drop one week from today, on August 26th. In other words, quit spamming that "refresh" button and sit tight.

Sprint Mogul Updated with Rev A, GPS

Although the Official download site isn't showing the new update, HTC has posted the long-awaited update to the Sprint Mogul, just as we predicted over the weekend. Go get it:

Direct Download from HTC America

Update: HTC is getting hammered. We'll host a mirror here for now:

Mirror

Since HTC hasn't yet posted the official update list, we can't say for sure what we're in for. However, we're darn sure that we are getting EVDO Rev A. and GPS is getting turned on in some way, shape, or form . Not to mention, version 3.35.651.2 should also hopefully include yet another fix for persistent Bluetooth problems.

Update: Here's the press release for you folks that love that sort of thing. GPS confirmed for really real and apparently the Mogul is the first Rev A. Handset. Seems odd that it's the first, no?

AT&T Tilt ROM Update Tomorrow (Update: It's Here!)

Update: The update is out now, you can go get it from HTC's site - looks like we should have been clearer when we said “AT&T will be releasing” the update, it's technically coming to you direct from HTC. Which is something we should have figured, since HTC seems to prefer providing their updates directly (ala the Mogul update) rather than mucking about having the carriers provide it. (Tip of the hat to Tilt Site for pointing out the distinction!)

Thanks to nbarksdale in the comments for telling us it's here. :D

We have it from reliable sources that AT&T will be releasing a ROM update tomorrow, February 15th. The update isn't going to add any significant new features -- unless “working properly” counts as a feature. It's not Windows Mobile 6.1 or a magical driver to speed up the display, either. Instead, expect a bunch of bugfixes, mostly related to speed and Bluetooth issues.

Here are the things you'll no longer suffer through on your Tilt once you apply the “software version 1.62.502.0”:

  • Device freezing during unlock process when a password is enabled on the device.
  • Pocket Outlook unresponsive when launched while on an active voice call.
  • Fast Forward and Rewind not working with Bluetooth headset and the Tilt.
  • DTMF tones for the slide out QWERTY keyboard not working.
  • Intermittent unresponsiveness from Touch Screen (aka Start Button Issue).
  • Excessive background noise while using a BT headset.

The update comes out tomorrow, but you might want to head to our How To article on Customizing your Tilt today so you can be prepared. A new ROM means that AT&T will be throwing a lot of crapware “bonus applications” onto the device, and the tips in the comments are something you'll want on hand when you apply the update.

Thanks anonymous tipster!

Update: We lied [about there being no new features available: WOW, can't believe I let that be so ambiguous!!] -- looks like there'll also be a new version of BlackBerry Connect tomorrow as well - though that might be available for any Windows Mobile device that uses BlackBerry Connect. It won't be built-into the ROM, but you can download the new version via the standard stub-app included on the Tilt.
