This is NOT the HTC Obsession

Sorry folks, we're just throwing this out there to say this is in NO WAY the HTC Obsession nor the HTC Supersonic (a rumored Sprint WiMax Android device), so don't get your hopes up.

In fact, an anonymous comment at Andoid Central notes that this is actually a rendering from late 2008, made by a fella who loves to concept work as a hobby.

So yeah, move a long. Nothing to see here.

Windows Mobile 7 (or just Seven) rumor roundup...

Posted on Thursday, Jan 21, 2010 by Malatesta

Since our big story on Seven a few days ago, leaks and information have continued to come forth.

We'll just summarize them all here since nothing is conclusive yet, but there are lots of interesting tidbits:

  • Windows Mobile 7 session at MIX 2010 announced: Evidently Microsoft is going to host a session on how to make apps and games for Seven in March at the big MIX '10 conference.  Looks like that Mobile World Congress debut is quite likely. (via MobileTechWorld)
  • Twitter comments are coming from some Microsoft/Danger employees. Mention WinMo7 team, doughnuts, private testing, and milestones. Tweets originate not from a Sidekick client but from Microsoft. Project Pink lives? (via EngadgetMobile)
  • Part II: List of those tweeting from Danger/Microsoft: Carlos Picoto, Director of program management at Microsoft; Jeff McKean - Senior Product Planner at Microsoft; Bruno Silva - Director of Development at Microsoft Corp., Zune; Daryl Welsh - Director of Test -Premium Mobile Experiences at Microsoft; Michael Ducker - Program Manager, Premium Mobile Experiences at Microsoft; Namrata Bachwani - Release Manager at Microsoft (Thanks azimmerm)
  • Our leak of the HTC Obsession gets backed up by another anonymous source at WMPU, who says that it is really the Diamond 3, which seems kind of obvious. Also AT&T may grab it too. (via WMPU)
  • Our own source reveals to us that Seven is backwards compatible with WM6.x applications (contra an earlier rumor), but it is limited to resolution restrictions. A security warning pops up on launch, but the program will work.  That info leads naturally to...
  • ...the idea that Seven is based on WinCE 7 aka Chelan, which our man with the knowledge Conflipper confidently states.
  • Finally, commenter drphysx, mentions this article from a few months back, which we think dovetails nicely with our big post.  It seems to fill in the background info on decision making. It's all theory, but we think its well thought out.

We're sure that's just the tip of the iceberg and we're expecting a lot more info to come forward in the next few weeks.  Stay tuned!

Windows Mobile 7: What we expect and what we are hearing

Okay everyone, time to put on your rumor helmets (they're like beer helmets, but filled with vodka). Here's what we are hearing about Windows Mobile 7 from various sources (none of which has been announced by Microsoft).

We'll spill the beans on what we're hearing about supposed various versions of Seven, two WM7 devices including full specs (the LG "Apollo" and HTC "Obsession") time-frames and even features.

T-Mobile to get Windows Mobile 6.5 on Jan. 6?

Posted on Thursday, Dec 10, 2009 by Malatesta

Take this with a big grain of salt, but TMo news has received word that T-Mobile's Touch Pro 2 (see review) and Dash 3G are to get their WM6.5 updates on Jan. 6, 2010.

While the exact date could be question, one doesn't have to look far to see that even Microsoft is calling for December/January WM6.5 updates for the Touch Pro 2 (more provoking is how Dash 3G is listed as "Date not yet available").

We'll keep following this rumor to see if it has any teeth, but hey ... you know it is coming sooner than later.

HTC Leo = HTC Thoth = HTC Athena 2, Got It?

So all these rumors abuzz about the HTC Leo specs and a "clamshell phone" are a bit on the money and a bit off.

First, while technically a phone, it's more a long the lines of a Mobile Internet Device (MID) then smartphone.

Second, it's not replacing HTC Universal but rather the HTC Athena, which garnered a lot of attention but seemed more experimental than anything.

In short, the HTC Leo is the very same  HTC Thoth that was mentioned in the leaked HTC 2009 Roadmap. Making sense yet?

So what are the specs? What we know so far is

  • Manilla 2.5
  • WVGA/16:9 Screen/4.3"
  • Snapdragon/1GHz
  • 8MP Camera--NEW (up from 5MP?)
  • WM6.5
  • 320mb/512mb RAM/ROM

Look for it by the end of the year and judging by the numerous ROMs floating around, don't be surprised if a few carriers pick it up this time.

The Winner of the Treo 800w Rumortastic Giveaway is...

What a long, strange trip it's been to the official release of the Treo 800w. We were initially worried that there wouldn't be enough Treo 800w rumors to keep up the interest over the many (many) months it took for the official release to happen. How wrong we were. Truly, these past few months have been rumortastic. But, like all silly seasons, this one too much come to a close. To celebrate, we're giving out winner:

  • A Treo 800w after it is officially released. If they end up calling it something else, well, let's just say we're giving away the next Windows Mobile device Palm releases for the Sprint Network. Got it?
  • An 8 gig microSD Card. Yeah, the WMExperts Store has 8 gig cards now.
  • Any 2 software titles from HobbesIsReal's excellent “Must-Have Windows Mobile Software” article. Sure, Palm will include some “secret recipe” stuff on the 800w, but you can always make Windows Mobile a little better. We believe in the software in Hobbes' article, you should too.

To recap, we had our members make their guesses as to what the official release date would be and we would pick the winner randomly from amongst all the correct guesses. You couldn't guess dates less than 2 weeks out and your most recent guess cancelled out your earlier guess.

So out of over 1000 posts we had 28 members guess the date exactly -- though 7 of them sadly changed their guess later on and cancelled it out.

Ok ok, enough preamble. The winner, chosen at random, is.... after the break. (Sorry, we couldn't resist)

Samsung i788 to Hit AT&T?

Picture 1-16

Here's a fun rumor we heard over the weekend from an anonymous tipster: at a meeting for AT&T Store managers, looks like a few manufacturer reps got a little overexcited about what's coming down the pike. One couldn't help himself from pulling a BlackBerry Bold out and flashing it around. Another, she had a full-on gear bag full of phones -- one of which appeared to be the Samsung i780. Technically, it would have been the Samsung SGH-i788, which has the bands necessary for the US 3G networks.

The rep said it was "OTA," which apparently in her parlance meant "not released" instead of "Over the air." As you'd expect, it's just a little thicker than the BlackJack II, features that weird mouse pointer, a telescoping stylus, and was, in fact, branded with the AT&T logo.

It was in the standard black color and was relatively pretty light considering what it packs. The battery was dead so our tipster didn’t get to see the interface (Let's assume WM6.1, eh?). Our hunch: it will be hitting the market around the same time the iPhone, Bold, and Treo 850 drop.

Windows Mobile 6.1 to Arrive April 1st? - Updated

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 26, 2008 by Dieter Bohn

Windows Mobile 6.1

Update: Looks like BGR received yet another one of those mysterious Q9s with WiFi. This one has what appears to be a finalized version of Windows Mobile 6.1 with a few new features. Go check it out.

...That's the prediction from Pocket Lint [via Gizmodo]. Sounds pretty good to us. We would normally be a little gun shy about this sort of prediction, especially since we whiffed our prediction it would be unveiled at MWC2008. However, CTIA just happens to start on April first. And Head-of-The-Division-That-Contains-Windows Mobile Robbie Bach just happens to be giving the keynote. And WMExperts just happens to be planning on heading over to Las Vegas for the show.

So file this one under “Very Likely.”

Speaking of CTIA: expect wall-to-wall coverage. We'll live-blog Bach's keynote, we started up a Twitter feed for WMExperts, and heck, we will even post up direct from the show floor via our trusty Motorola Q9h.

Windows Mobile 6.1, if you'll recall from the many leaks, features a much-improved Today screen experience and (FINALLY) native threaded SMS, among other improvements.

More Treo 800w Details Surface?

Folks looking to win in our Rumortastic Treo 800w giveaway have some more fodder to work with trying to guess the date and win that Treo. A new user in our forums, the mysterious anonuser, has two posts to his or her name, but they're interesting and sound pretty darn legit. Anon claims to have seen an internal document that fills us in on some new deets.

The first gives us plenty of reasons to be excited, as it confirms some previous rumors and gives us hope that Palm has finally seen the light and is dropping their horrendous “Athena” connector:

The Treo 800w (from Sprint) will have a mini-USB plug on the bottom of the device. It's about as thin as a Centro, and actually feels quite nice in the hand. It will ship with WinMo 6, and will be compatible with WinMo 6.1 once an update is released. Not a whole lot of feature upgrades, but does make it compatible with Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. Along with the classic on/off switch for the ringer, there is a convenient WiFi on/off button. I tried the camera out, and at 2.0mp, it took decent pictures, though I didn't have a chance to upload them to my PC to look over. It also comes standard with an EvDO Rev. A radio, bluetooth 2.0 +EDR, and 802.11g WiFi. [...] This device is slated to be released in April of this year.

Nice, eh? The second post confirms that we will indeed get aGPS on this baby plus adds some specification goodness:

The Treo 800W has MicroSD and 256MB memory. I believe there is another 128MB for something else, but I can't remember what the document said. [...]Oh, and there's no more headphone jack on the device, you'll have to utilize the mini-usb plug with an adapter, or use bluetooth wireless.

We don't know anonuser (he or she is, after all, anonymous, but we will say that the info has the ring of truth to it. April is quite a bit later than we'd hoped for, but for a thin, touchscreen, GPS, WiFi, 320x320 power-device like this, we're willing to wait!

...just might be time for you to change your guess in the Treo 800w contest, eh? (remember, kids, the date has to be two weeks out from the day you guess)

HTC Omni Rendering and Specs

 Wp-Content Uploads 2007 07 Htc-Omni

Some bits about the Omni rumors that hit over yesterday's holiday - 1) I used to think that artistic renderings of this sort were basically unreliable, but I've come around and so I think we're going to see a device that looks very much like this image. 2) It's going to be super small for what is going to be built-in, although sadly not thinner than the HTC Advantage. Just not as wide. 3) How long before video-out is standard on smartphones? 4) In the leaked HTC roadmap last month (the reliability of which I'm still not sold on), there was no mention of the Omni. 5) Oh, yeah, the specs are as hot as the device is cool-looking. Creating the relevant hot/cool pun is left as an exercise for the reader.

HTC Omni specs that we know about today are: - Windows Mobile 6.0 OS - UMTS/HSDPA connectivity - WVGA 4″ 800×480 px display, subdisplay - TV and VGA out - 256 ROM, 1280 RAM and microSD memory card slot - Wi-Fi b/g, USB and Bluetooth connectivity - GPS/A-GPS - Full QWERTY keyboard - Dimensions: 130 x 81 x16 mm
