SlingPlayer Mobile Gets that Update!

If you remember a few weeks ago we dropped the line that Sling was updating their PocketPC client and that they were aiming for a Christmas launch.

Well, looks like they came through as they just announced that new version, which has been making the beta rounds in the last 2 weeks.

Enough small talk, here's what's new. Basically a slew of new device support (full list after the jump) and some new stuff like:

  • Provided you install SlingPlayer Mobile using the .EXE file, it will once again sync Slingbox information between SlingPlayer 2.0 and SlingPlayer Mobile.

  • SlingPlayer Mobile can now perform major/minor tuning, which is often seen for those tuning digital broadcast channels (5.2, 5.3, etc.).

  • The new SlingPlayer Mobile also includes a roaming notification feature, which will let you know if your phone switches to roaming mode while streaming.

  • Updated channel logos.

Not bad at all!

Sync your phone with Windows Media Center

Posted on Thursday, Dec 4, 2008 by Phil Nickinson

MediaCenterSync

Windows Mobile phones are becoming more powerful and getting bigger screens with higher resolutions, and that means more of us will start using them for media playback. (We’ll ignore, for the moment, that Windows Mobile’s built-in media player still leaves a lot to be desired.)

Pocket Now [via] has instructions on how to rig your computer to automatically sync recorded television programs to your Windows Mobile phone via Windows Media Center, or Vista Premium or Ultimate.

The process appears to be a little time-consuming, not to mention it takes up a good chunk of your storage card. And you have to deal with Windows Media Player (we’re not ignoring it any longer), and we all know how often that ends in tears.

One other drawback is that the video is down-sampled to 320x240, which negates the advantage of having one of those gorgeous, new, high-res screens. But if Sling’s not your thing — though there may be some high-res help on the way — this could be a nice stopgap.

While 320x320 users (Treo Pro, 800w, Epix, i780, Saga) and newer resolutions like 800x480 (Sony Xperia) have been suffering without any SlingPlayer support, we're getting word that may be ending very soon.

We're hearing that the latest version, which will update resolution support and perhaps other performance issues, has just entered private beta testing. Hmm...maybe this update will finally bump it to v2.0 along with their desktop software? One can hope at least.

Furthermore, we can tentatively expect an official update by the end of the month, right in time for the holidays.

For those wanting to lend Sling a hand, you can always sign up for their beta program here.

SlingPlayer Updated for Windows Mobile 6

 Docs Cp 179 Slingplayer T-Mobile-Wing1

That was pretty quick! Just over two weeks ago Sling put out a call for Beta testers for a new version of their SlingPlayer Mobile client that would be compatible with Windows Mobile 6. And badda-bing, today Smartphone Thoughts reports that the client is ready to rock. Now, granted, Windows Mobile 6 isn't all that different from its predecessor, but this humble writer suspects that the SlingPlayer digs pretty deep into the OS to get its great video quality - so it makes sense that it would take some tweaking to make it work with the latest and greatest.

Now, I don't have a Slingbox myself just yet - but its definitely my plan to pick up one of those suckers just as soon as I get, you know, a TV. If you're one of those folks who happens to own both a TV and a Windows Mobile device (imagine that!), I heartily recommend you pick up a SlingBox posthaste.

Help Sling Support WM6

It's a little surprising to hear, since WM6 is so close to WM5 in its underpinnings, but the SlingPlayer for Windows Mobile isn't working on WM6 yet. Never fear, though, the folks at Sling are working on it and they'd like your help -- in the form of a private beta for the update. Sling's built up a lot of street cred with the mobile crowd (or with me, anyway), so I suspect that it won't be long before this private beta becomes a public one.

We are actively working on a new version of the SlingPlayer Mobile that will add support for Windows Mobile 6 and are currently looking for people to participate in a private beta of the new Windows Mobile 6 compatible version of the SlingPlayer

Why the extra "i" in Glofiish? Did they mean to put it up front? At any rate, say hello to this GSM slider PPC with built-in GPS. Availability (or detailed, uh, details) still unknown, but it's a good bet you won't be seeing it in the US especially soon.

The glofiish M700 supports GSM, GPRS and high-speed EDGE for voice and data connectivity almost worldwide, while IEEE802.11b/g support allows users to connect to public and private Wi-FI® networks when in range of suitable hotspots. For travelers, the glofiish M700 also features GPS and TMC functions delivered via an embedded SiRF Star III chipset allowing the glofiish M700 to handle both daily business needs and weekend leisure.
