Review: Samsung WEP870

Samsung WEP870 - Profile View

With all of the choices that technology gives us, sometimes the differences between one device and another get blurred. This statement is especially true with the proliferation of Bluetooth headsets. Most headsets follow a similar shape and offer similar features, so it can be difficult to discern the pros and cons of a particular product.

The flip side of this argument is that when a manufacturer releases a headset that breaks the mold and brings a new form factor and/or groundbreaking features, it comes as a breath of fresh air to those of us who follow the market closely. I would like to welcome to the world: Samsung’s WEP870. What is it about this headset that sets it apart from a world full of pretenders and lookalikes? Hit the jump to find out.

Review: Samsung SBH600 Bluetooth Headphones

Posted on Thursday, Oct 15, 2009 by Tim Ferrill

Samsung SBH600 - Perspective View

Ok, I admit it. I have a problem. I am addicted to Bluetooth Stereo Headphones. I just can’t help it. I love music; and being a gadget junkie, anything wireless is just that much better. I’ve already found my favorite all around solution. Motorola’s S305 headphones are lightweight and perfect for use in a wide variety of situations. The one knock against the S305’s though, was the fact that they don’t put out sound that you would expect from a pair of premium headphones. This brings us to my new quest. Find the perfect pair of high-end, audiophile quality Bluetooth Headphones. First on the pedestal are the SBH600’s from Samsung.

Obviously, Samsung is one of the big names in Electronics. Their fingers are in every market from computers to TVs to some of the most popular Windows Mobile devices ever (BlackJack, BlackJack II, Omnia, Jack, Omnia II, etc.). Bluetooth is another one of those areas that they are intimately familiar with. My criteria for this review are going to be based primarily on comfort, sound quality, ease of use and additional premium features. Hit the jump for the full review.

Review: Motorola MOTOROKR S305

Posted on Saturday, Aug 1, 2009 by Tim Ferrill

Motorola S305 - Front View

The quest continues. I’ve tested Bluetooth Headphones from Sony, Jabra and a couple from Motorola; all of which have pros and cons. The perfect Bluetooth headphones for me would be comfortable to wear for an extended period of time while having the weight distributed in a way that would allow for activity without having wires running different directions.

Motorola has made a number of successful Bluetooth  headphones. The S9 model and its successor, the S9-HD both insert into the ears with a band that wraps behind the head. The S7 model has a slightly different design with only a wire going behind the head and the earpieces hooking over the ear. Motorola’s S305 are my next target and is something of a cross between the two form factors. Featuring an over-the-ear design combined with the wrap-around style, the S305 combines some of the best features in each of Motorola’s other models.

All the juicy details are after the break.

Review: Motola MotoROKR S7-HD

Posted on Wednesday, Jul 8, 2009 by Tim Ferrill

Motorola S7-HD - Product Shot

Frequent readers of this space will recall that I am on a never-ending quest to acquire the perfect Bluetooth stereo headphones. Several aspiring candidates have come and gone (Motorola’s S9-HD, Jabra’s BT3030, et al); all have left room for improvement, none have completely won me over.

And so the saga continues with another offering from Motorola, the MOTOROKR S7-HD. Not one to be constrained by standard naming conventions (where later models will have progressively higher numbers), the S7-HD is a successor to the S9/S9-HD headphones. While the S9 series is a designed as a single piece that goes behind the head and over each ear, the $69.95 S7-HD’s are of the over-the-ear variety with only a wire connecting the two earpieces.

All of the minutiae regarding the S7-HD headphones are on the other side of the break.

Review: Blueant M1 Bluetooth Speaker System

Posted on Friday, Sep 26, 2008 by Tim Ferrill

Blueant_M1-01.jpg

I love it when my iPhone toting friends start describing why their phone is the superior device on the smartphone market. My typical response is going through the list of things that my Tilt does that their precious iPhone does not. The primary weakness that I tend to bring up is the lack of A2DP (Bluetooth stereo audio) support.

We here at WMExperts have reviewed several accessories that support the A2DP Bluetooth profile, ranging from headphones to audio gateways intended to stream audio through your home stereo. One type of accessory that is just now starting to pick up steam among accessory manufacturers are Bluetooth enabled speaker systems, like Blueant’s M1.

Stick around for the juicy details.

Review: Motorola MOTOROKR S9 Stereo Bluetooth Headset

Set2

Last time I reviewed Motorola’s S805 DJ-style Stereo BT headset and gave it high marks for quality, performance and battery life although the form-factor of the headset (large, over the ear) may be off-putting for some.

Along comes the Motorola MOTOROKR S9 headset ($79.95) with a much smaller profile perfectly suited for exercising or the daily commuter.

How does it measure up? Read on for my experience, which is a mixed bag of pros and cons.

Improve your WM sound: SRS WOW Plugin

We all have been underwhelmed by our WM device speakers at one time or another. Sure, some devices are actually quite usable and pleasant (e.g. Motorola Q + Q9 series have fantastic stereo speakers) but a lot of devices are quite "...eh".

One trick to improve that sound (and the one via your headphones) is via an audio plugin that artificially enhances the sound--much like the "loud" button on your fancy-schmancy car stereo. Well now you can do the same for your PPC and even WM Smartphone device.

We won't get into the details as Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen over at PPC-Mag (who makes me look like an amateur any day) has gone above and beyond in explaining how it all works and how to get it on your device. And although Werner shows that this does increase your CPU usage, it ain't too bad at all and well worth the trade-off for better sound.
