TouchTwit gets bumped to v1.6

It seems as if the Twitter-client wars have simmered down a little bit (remember when we had updates like every few weeks?), but the biggies are still dropping some changes.

In this case, TouchTwit has updated to v1.6 (the author has been busy with civil service) and there are some nice new features and fixes:

  • New notification for "new followers"
  • New notification for "unfollows"
  • Some Theme-bugs fixed
  • Lesser memory ussage
  • Lesser cpu ussage
  • Scrolling bugs on 1Ghz processors fixed
  • More->Following was modified
  • And a lot of small bugs are fixed too

Overall it seems to work quite well, although we find the background vs. foreground sync option a bit confusing and limited (only 1 hour in background?).

Still, you can't beat the graphics and that scrolling all for a very fair $1.99.  Updates can be found in the Windows Marketplace.

HTC says HD2 getting Windows Mobile 7 isn't a done deal

 HTC Twiter

If you ever need more confirmation that the HTC HD2 was going to get an update to Windows Mobile 7, we'll point you to the facts that (A) The original tweet saying an upgrade was coming was quickly deleted and (B) the above non-denial-denial recently posted by HTC. OK, we get it. That the HD2 might be upgraded to Windows Mobile 7 is "unconfirmed." Sure thing, guys. (Thanks to everyone who sent this in!)

Twitter finally hits Zune HD

Twitter on the Zune HD

The Zune HD (read our reviews here and here) is still not a Windows Mobile phone, no matter how much I wish it to be so. (And no matter how many times I try talking into it.) That said, it desperately has been in need of a Twitter application. Microsoft finally delivered. Sort of.

I'm so distraught over the $@!#^& automatic censoring that's built in (and can't be turned off), I can't even bring myself to review it. (And don't get me started on the settings menu.) The good news is Microsoft reportedly is updating the app to remove the censorship. But, c'mon, guys. That never should have made it out the door.

There is a bit of good news in that Microsoft dropped the ads from its "utility" apps. But it still takes way to long to launch the calculator. Ugh.

Anyhoo, we'll let our pal Matt Miller from ZDNet and NokiaExperts fame do his thing. Thanks for taking one for the team here, Matt. Check out his full rundown at ZDNet, and peep his video after the break.

moTweets gets bumped to v1.5; Gets Lists support

Posted on Thursday, Dec 3, 2009 by Malatesta

Filed Under: News, Software; Tags: v1.5, twitter, moTweets, client

moTweets (see full review here) got a nice bump yesterday, like every other program evidently.

New in v1.5:

  • Auto-refresh Popup notification will no longer come up
  • Removed message to ask to go online, no longer required
  • NEW: Now has the option to play system sounds
  • NEW: Picture services twitpic.com, yfrog.com, twipl.net
  • NEW: Initial implimentation of Twitter Lists, can view the lists
  • NEW: Added Italian and Korean translations
  • NEW: Translate Tweets option
  • NEW: Block user
  • NEW: Report as Spam
  • Fixed issue with loading and uploading larger images

Admittedly, it's been awhile since we played with moTweets but we have to confess, it has become quite good as of late.  We especially like the Raven Black color scheme now (see above), though the scrolling is a bit too kinetic at times.

Still, if you are a fan you should upgrade either by downloading the update .cab over your existing version or via Marketplace (when it shows up).

Follow Friday: ROM chefs on Twitter

WMExperts Twitter list of custom ROM chefs

Trying to keep up with which ROM chef is cooking what and when is enough to drive you batty. (Or in Malatesta's case, enough to make you start cooking your own ROMs.) So, we've started adding chefs to a Twitter list. Give it a look-see. By no means is it comprehensive (yet), so sound off in the comments if you know of someone we should add.

Spruce up sliding panels on WinMo 6.5

Although many like to use HTC's TouchFLO3D, using the Sliding Panels (aka Titanium on WM6.5) is sometimes preferable — in fact I often find it more efficient and revealing, which is why I'm taking a well-deserved hiatus from HTC's design.

Case in point, there are lots of really good 3rd party plug-ins that can be added to the sliding panels to augment their functionality. Sure TouchFLO3D may have lots of eye candy, but as far as speed of access, Titanium is faster.

In this post, I'll share with you three which really improve the usefulness of the default WM6.5 home screen: Twitter (Titanium Artesea), Favorite People (AppStar Titanium) and Weather (Showaco TitaniumWeather*).

Quick review: TouchTwit Twitter app

Posted on Tuesday, Oct 27, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

A couple of us have been passing this review off on each other. Guess who drew the short straw. TouchTwit isn't the worst Twitter app in the world. It's just a little awkward. Slow in some places, and a little too quick in others. A lot like you were in high school. Fortunately, you've got 24 hours in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile to try out an app and return it. TouchTwit's available now for $4.99.

App update: Twikini hits v1.6

Posted on Friday, Oct 23, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

Twikini, one of our more favorite Windows Mobile Twitter applications, just hit Version 1.6. First, the change log:

  • Bug fix: Fixes connectivity issue many T-Mobile users were experiencing when downloading timelines.
  • Bug fix: After a re-tweet, the highlighted tweet would be lost, and the newest tweet would be highlighted. Fixed this.
  • Improved: Tapping on a user's picture in the profile or tweet window will show a large picture of the user.
  • Improved: The profile window will show the date on which a user joined Twitter (this can be useful when deciding whether to follow someone).
  • Improved: Added "My Profile" (under the Tools menu) to quickly check your own profile.
  • Improved: URL shortening will use http://j.mp instead of Bit.ly, which will give you 2 extra characters. (Note: j.mp is part of Bit.ly).

Now, the real interesting part: If you've previously purchased Twikini from the Trinket Software Web site, you can head on over there (or use the in-app version check feature) and get the upgrade.

But Twikini also is available in the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. And while it's not the first app in the Marketplace to be updated (Facebook is another one that comes to mind; there may be others), we've gotten a feel for how long it took the update to be pushed out. From Twikini's Twitter feed:

Twikini 1.6 now available in the @wmdev Marketplace. Wow...that certification was FAST! less than 24 hours.

That certainly passed muster faster than anything in Apple's app store. Of course, that's hardly a fair comparison, as Apple's seeing 8,500 submissions a week, and there's no way the Marketplace is at that pace yet. But it does give us an early baseline, and it will be interesting to see how Microsoft keeps up with submission demand.

TouchTwit: Another Twitter app, coming soon

Posted on Wednesday, Oct 14, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

Another Windows Mobile Twitter application is coming down the pike. TouchTwit is awaiting approval from the Windows Marketplace for Mobile. And assuming it passes, it looks like it could give our two favorites, PocketTwit and Twikini, a run for their money. [via The:Unwired]

Kinoma Play updated, is now location-aware

Posted on Tuesday, Sep 22, 2009 by Phil Nickinson

Location-based Twitter on Kinoma Play

Kinoma Play, one of our favorite Windows Mobile multimedia players has been updated and now sports location-based features and has tied it into its built-in Twitter app. (Pretty cool for spying on your tweeting neighbors.)

In addition, tweets containing YouTube or Flickr images now open within Kinoma Play instead of launching a browser.

There are a few more bugfixes and updates in this build, too. Find 'em all on the Kinoma blog, and get the update directly in the Kinoma Play app.
