Alltel, Telus, US Cellular get 2016 SMS Timestamp fix

Y'all remember that 2016-SMS timestamp bug we discussed a few weeks ago? The one that caused all incoming text messages to be dated from the year 2016?

Well, good news as HTC has released patches for Telus, US Cellular and Alltel users (Sprint got theirs last week; not a peep though from Verizon yet).

Telus

Alltel

US Cellular

Remember, these don't play too well with custom ROMs, so best to stick with the 'Ziggy' patch.

Sure, this was an unfortunate bug, but three to four weeks isn't too bad for an official patch, we suppose...we mean in comparison to where we were a few years ago (Anyone remember the Sprint 700wx SMS debacle? That was like a 6 month wait!)

[Thanks to Gregory P for the Telus tip!]

Sprint & Verizon Touch Pro 2 to launch with WM6.1; US Cellular goes WM6.5

Okay folks we have some good news/bad news:

Bad news first is that Sprint and Verizon are launching the hotly anticipated Touch Pro 2 with the same build of Windows Mobile 6.1 as the recently launched Telus version (review).

Interestingly, US Cellular will be launching out the gate with Windows Mobile 6.5 on its Rhodium device, though we have no firm date on that release yet.

Now some goods news:  Sprint and Verizon both have working test-ROMs with Windows Mobile 6.5 already, meaning an official update won't be too far off after launch (8-12 weeks?).  Seems both companies are racing to get it out the door ASAP, so no one is waiting for a stable Windows Mobile 6.5.

Finally, Verizon is not only keeping the GPS unlocked, but it looks to be shipping with Bing/Live Search in the actual ROM. This is odd for them since Verizon usually includes its own Nav program and not Bing/Google Maps (like on the Ozone). Definitely a change in practice there!

Alltel, US Cellular to Drop Lime Green Motorola Q9c, also Licorice

Update: Yeah, so it's also available in Black, er, Licorice as well. Serves us right trying to post a story during a 20 minute layover. Sorry there. Please disregard the catty comments about color availability below.

Engadget Mobile is reporting the only good Motorola news we've heard in weeks - that the Q9c is going to hit Alltel and US Cellular for just $99.99 after contract. That's the good news. The bad news is this decidedly business-friendly device (We said of Sprint Q9c that “the C is for Corporate”) comes in a decidedly un-business-friendly color: Lime Green.

Now, we always come down on the side of offering devices in several different colors, but there must always be a conservative option on every carrier. The business set needs to have something relatively plain, folks. Not to mention that there may be some folks who look at this green tint and think “The C is for Yeecch!.”
