All's been relatively quiet on the Viigo front of late, with the RSS reader's "Project Tango" Windows Mobile beta, well, still in beta.

For the uninitiated, Viigo is a pretty robust RSS reader that stores and gives you access to your feed list from Viigo's servers. Switch devices and your feeds follow you. No need to manually re-enter them, which is a godsend. You can also manage your feed list from a standard Web page.

In addition to being a standard RSS reader, you also get election news, weather info, sports scores — as our cousins at Crackberry.com beat us to the punch just noted, NBA scores are now available — stocks and airline information, and local classified listings.

However, a number of users (including yours truly) recently ran into an issue that kept them from logging into their accounts from the phone, thus denying access to their feeds. That issue has been fixed in a new build. Go get it here.

If you haven't tried Viigo, give it a shot. The beta's free and works on touchscreen and non-touchscreen phones. And as long as you're adding RSS feeds be sure to check out our new combined RSS feed for the Smartphone Experts Network.

Playing catch-up: An update to Viigo's WinMo app

Screen02 Viigo, long one of our favorite RSS readers, recently updated its free Windows Mobile beta of Project Tango to version 3.0.18.

In the listed improvements are a U.S. Elections channel, options for the stocks services, and a channel for the Olympics, which, of course, are now over.

Also now available are live NFL scores, just in time for the beginning of the season Thursday.

Remember that this is a beta application, and there are bound to be some bugs. And while its multimedia capabilities are still behind that of Kinoma Play, it does pick up in the RSS reader category. And, best of all, it's free.

Check it out now at http://www.viigo.com/wmbeta.

Project Tango

We've long been fans of Viigo's mobile RSS reader, and we were practically salivating when we got our first look at Project Tango on the BlackBerry.

And now, Viigo has released a free beta Project Tango application for Windows Mobile devices.

Included in the current beta is support for:

  • News and RSS
  • Audio and podcasts(!)
  • Weather
  • Sports
  • Entertainment
  • Stocks
  • Finance

And coming up we should see airline flight info and local search. Also, if you already use Viigo, your feeds can be imported to Project Tango from your My Viigo account.

The BlackBerry edition of Project Tango teamed up with the WES conference in May, and the WinMo version is dubbed the "Microsoft Worldwide Partners Conference edition" in conjunction with this week's shindig in Houston.

Viigo - A Great Windows Mobile RSS Reader

If you're not already using an RSS reader on your Windows Mobile phone, you're really missing out. Even with the best browser out there, you're still visiting each page individually, hunting around the page for the content you're actually looking for. RSS is much more efficient - you just pick the sites you want to follow, subscribe to their RSS feeds (here's ours!), and the headlines and stories get synced to your device. Just the content you want, none of the extra fluff.

To get started learning about RSS, check out our How To article: “Learn Mobile RSS and Why It Matters.” Then go take a look at Viigo, an RSS reader for Windows Mobile that's free and a quality product. They were at the Mobile World Congress this past week (Viigo's MWC Press Release) showing sneak previews of “Project Tango.” Since we weren't in Spain, we don't have the full skinny, but from the teaser photo at right it certainly looks like there's going to be podcast support.

Why would you care about podcast support on your Windows Mobile phone? Stay tuned... Wink wink, nudge nudge!
