Verizon XV5800 Gets Small Bump

The last time we saw the Verizon XV5800, we were slightly disillusioned because it looked like the keyboard was identical to the one I hate on the GSM Vox (review here). That's changed, I see, although the 3G speeds that we're expecting on the XV5800 have not. Also unchanged: Verizon's inability to get a product out anywhere near the time we (and their own employees, I might add) expect. Qwest has had the 5800 since August, for Pete's sake.

So yeah, pricing and availability unknown. Looking at the pictures that Engadget scored - It's clear that at least this new-look XV5800 has done a better job dodging the ugly stick than it's big brother, the XV6800.

We've had a mess of Verizon rumors in the past couple of weeks, so let's get clear on what's coming from them Windows Mobile-wise. Fortunately, we have a nice way to do that courtesy of phoneArena, who snagged some internal documents from the big V.

Release dates for all these devices have been all over the map, and some rumors dates have been missed. Suffice to say that they'll all hit in 2007 and I personally think they'll hit in the order I present them after the break, read on.

So we just found out that Verizon is launching the MotoQ9M, the Samsung i760, and the UTStarcom XV6800. Add one more to the list, the UTStarcom XV5800. The what? You know -- The Vox.

When I first saw the Vox, I was giddy as a schoolgirl. When I opened the Vox, I tittered. When I used Windows Mobile 6 and HTC's Audio Manager app, I was impressed. When I reviewed the Vox, well, I was disappointed. Will the Verizon version make it any better?

It might. The processor is faster, as is the data speed (EVDO Rev A). Given the general reaction to my review, I was the only one who complained about battery life, so maybe the faster processor and data won't really be an issue. They keyboard is slightly different, too, so maybe even that won't be such a hassle.

Quite a month for you, eh Verizon? Sorta takes the sting away from turning down the iPhone.
