What would a week be without some salacious rumor mongering about the Palm Treo 800w, eh? And let it be known, it is officially crazy season as we’re expecting this device to finally make its appearance sometime this summer.

Two important updates this week:

Click on through to get the low-down!

The first, Beta testing, involves Palm teaming up with a 3rd party company (Centercode) to conduct a semi-private/public beta testing of the Sprint 800w. This is a move we greatly approve of here at WMExperts as it is better for you, the end-user.

Lots of questions from readers about beta testing, especially “How do I get in!”. So here’s the low down.

Beta testing hardware/software

Centercode is a company who specializes in managing beta testing for companies. Enrollment is up to their contractor (Palm) in this case and if you have hung around the TreoCentral forums for a few years, you’d know that once in a blue moon Centercode will “open” enrollment for people who are interested. Currently, it is closed and the phones have already gone to their lucky testers, so you are out of luck for now. Sorry!

How are users selected?

While the qualifications are currently not known, basically it comes down to your demographic information such as occupation, income, amount of time traveling, etc. Users are assumed to be randomly selected from this pool and sent invites. They are under NDA (non-disclosure agreement) not to reveal or share any information about the product. (That also means you should not PM users and beg them!)

How does the process work?

In simplest terms, it’s a bulletin board system where users interact with Palm, giving feedback on their device and experience.

Does this mean that the 800w is pushed back even further?

Probably not. Beta testing these devices is usually set for 4-6 weeks but can vary depending on what is required. The purpose of the beta is to further road-test the device by getting user feedback from actual users (gasp!). Most companies do not bother with this step as they are content with

  • Internal testing (engineers, software developers)
  • Carrier testing

Palm in this case is taking the extra step to make sure there are no fatal flaws with the launch of the 800w as well as fixing any minor issues (speaker volume, ringers, etc.). The benefit is to hopefully catch some serious problems e.g. not enough memory or poor BT which affected such recent devices as the Sprint Mogul (ppc-6800).

This risk, of course is early leaks, pictures, YouTube videos and complete reviews of what is essentially an unfinished product—something that most companies prefer to keep internal till all issues are fixed for obvious reasons.

Which leads us conveniently to

A Verizon 800w Sighting!

In addition, long time forum member nyc_rock recently was able to actually play with the Verizon version.

Some things that were noted by his quick handling:

  • Plastic outer-shell
  • 256/128mb memory
  • WM 6.1
  • Wifi
  • Burgundy color
  • Thick/thin as the HTC Touch
  • No GPS?

Nyc_rock was not too impressed with the shell of the device, noting it felt somewhat cheaper than previous devices. Of course this may be the result of using lighter composites to keep the device unburdened by weight, however nyc-rock still prefers the rubber paint of more recent devices instead of the plastic feel. In addition he wasn’t as "wowed” by it as he would have liked but as mentioned above, it is not clear just how “finished” the device really is at this point.

Anyways, head over to that thread and our 800w sub-forum to continue the discussion!

I was part of the Palm VII beta, does anyone remember the Palm VII? So, this isn't the first time Palm has done a beta like this.
Correct. In fact, just last summer they ran a beta which turned out to have been for the Foleo.
Please tell me there will be a GSM version.
I just heard the iPhone will be sporting a gps....if this turns out to be true....I'm gone...headed for iphone land....Big screen, wifi, gps, and good music syncing...It's the quadfecta....
I get a kick out of the hub-bub people are making over the 800w. So, Palm is adding WiFi and possibly GPS. Big deal. It's like automobile manufacturer that produced a car without air conditioning and stereo saying "hey, we're making a new car that has ac and a great sounding stereo."

I'd say it's a bit more than that...

The GPS thing seems mostly a choice of the carriers and Sprint is finally paying for GPS to be enabled on these devices (Q9, 6800, 800w) whereas they didn't on old devices (Q, 6700, 700wx).

Plus it's two other things: form factor and Palm's optimizations/tweaks to the OS. I think it's pretty much consensus that the 700wx at the time had the best implemenation of WM5 in terms of speed, usability and just being smarter.

If there was something comparable to the 800w currently on Sprint/Verizon etc. that was made by another company, the excitement would be less, but that is just not the case.

Plus at least on Sprint, the 6800 has wonky GPS/BT and the Touch no Wifi/GPS, so it's not like those features cannot be improved upon further.
The Palm tweaks and optimizations are becoming more and more "common place" among all WM devices. For example, things like today Google search can be had by any WM device, and threaded messaging will be standard on WM 6.1 devices. Although I did enjoy the today contact search and icon control for phone mail, I am really not missing those things on my current device, the Touch Cruise. As far a form factor, Palm has once again rode the Treo-form for much too long, yet another reason to say "big deal".

True, but no one knows what Palm is bringing to the table in terms of those optimizations for the 800w (if any), so that can't be judged right now.

At least from one report, the 800w doesn't use the msm-7500 chipset so hopefully it will avoid that chipset's issues (poor graphic support; under performing arm11 processor).

I'm not sure what you mean that Palm "...rode the Treo-form for much too long". For one Treo™ means front-qwerty touch screen device, so if we are talking the Treo 800w, it has to be that form factor--otherwise it'd be the Palm "X".

Now, if you want to say they should in addition have other form factors--that is a fair argument and Palm is planning to have more device designs in 2009.

But I think you may be missing just how much people like "Treo™" and not Touch's or sliders...that's the reason why I haven't bought those devices and why the "hub bub" from others.

BTW, the same argument can be leveled against RIM and their rehashed BlackBerry line.

Meaning it was too big and chunky for too long for the front facing keyboard form factor.

I had a Treo for well over a year and for the most part I liked the device. However, the lack of some relatively common features including a slimmer form factor, had me looking for solutions elsewhere. The Treo 750's screen while visible in direct sunlight, was terrible and washed out looking.

I just think that the "hub-bub" is a little overplayed given that these features were available on a good number of WM devices for sometime. However, I understand that the front-facing keyboard devices have been a bit rare as of late and hopefully that will change when Samsung and Velocity Mobile get their devices over here.
"hey, we're making a new car that has ac and a great sounding stereo."

But if you really really like a style of car, so much that you've been using that style regardless of it's missing components, and they announced that they're adding your stereo and a/c, with a few more features others don't have (320x320?), you'd be excited too
1. I did use that style for well over a year, and i still say "no big deal".
2. Can't really get excited about anything CDMA based (personal preference of course).
