Turbo mode in T-Mobile build of Opera Mobile (Update 2: Kinda, sorta, not really)

Opera Mobile

Update 2: Matt checks back in and lets us know that while there is a check box for "Turbo," it doesn't enable a proxy like in the 9.7 beta.

Original: One of the main features of the Opera Mobile 9.7 beta is the "Turbo" feature, which basically switches the browser to a proxy mode, rendering the page elsewhere and piping it to your phone. Bottom line: It's faster, but with more security concerns.

But it turns out the Turbo mode is available in the build of Opera Mobile 9.5 found on the recently released T-Mobile Touch Pro 2. Matt Miller (of Nokia Experts fame and his own ZDNet blog) discovered such and shares the details:

  1. Type opera:config in the URL box.
  2. Scroll to User Prefs
  3. Choose "Turbo Mode" and hit the checkbox to enable it.
  4. Scroll down and hit save.

Matt also details a couple of other tricks, such as setting Opera to be the default browser in TouchFLO 3D, and increasing the number of tabs possible in the browser. Check it all out here.

Update: Our pal Gregory, who reviewed the Telus Touch Pro 2 for us, er, tells us that the Turbo mode is available in the Canadian version, too.

The Turbo option is also present on the Telus Touch Pro 2. At least, it's there in the opera:config

I have the European unlocked Touch Pro 2 and the option is also present under opera:config too.

It doesn't seem to do much on my phone though:

1. Sites that check my IP address report my true IP address and not that of a proxy

2. WAP sites like o2's home mobile page that aren't supposed to work via proxy still work fine

3. The Turbo mode tick is unticked after a soft reset.

i'm actually really stoked to hear this, after hearing about the $150 version you could order direct from tmobile over the phone, i'm really hoping ATT has something simliar, if they do i'll get it for sure, if they're asking for that absurd 299 price point, forget it.

I'm sorry to disappoint you all but you have this function confused with something else. The Turbo Mode refers to drawing images instantly when a page is rendered. It's an option in every Opera 9.5 build I've used. It's in 9.7 also. It doesn't make much of a difference though. The proxy mode you're talking about involves enabling a preference setting called Opera Turbo (yes its confusing) in the settings tab of only Opera 9.7

ehh... i think its been in the config for a long time now for many phones and their respective opera builds... so many builds of opera are available since it first debuted on a phone. and i'm not sure it even works like it does in 9.7. it was a big deal that 9.7 had it in the general settings and made a difference.

I emailed my contact at Opera to clarify this setting and will report back on my blog as soon as I get an answer.

The other tips I listed though are still pretty helpful for Touch Pro2 users :)

I just updated and clarified my post after testing out Opera Mobile 9.7 with Turbo and Opera Mobile 9.5 with the other turbo checkbox enabled and it is clear you experts here are correct, this is not the same turbo. Sorry for getting your hopes up, but I do think the other two tips may help some people out.
