Good news for British fans of Windows Mobile, huge touchscreens and fast processors: The Toshiba TG01, as expected, will be exclusive on the Orange network starting July 10 and is free if you sign up for a two-year contract.

A refresher on the specs:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional (upgradable to 6.5 - which we've already seen on it).
  • Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon processor at 1GHz.
  • Size: 70x130x9.9 mm.
  • Weight: 129g.
  • 4.1-inch, 480x800 resistive touchscreen.
  • 3.2MP camera.
  • 512MB ROM/256MB RAM.
  • MicroSD card.
  • Bluetooth 2.0.
  • WiFi b/g.
  • 1,000mAh battery. (Rut-ro, Raggy. That's gonna need some pretty regular charging.)
  • Quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900); 2100MHz for HSPA. So it'll work in the U.S., just not with 3G data.
  • aGPS.

Should be interesting to see some real-world results on battery life. While the Snapdragon is supposed to make things easier on the power source, a mere 1,000mAh battery makes us cringe a little. And do note that the phone will work on the U.S. GSM network, but data will be limited to EDGE only.

I WANT THIS PHONE!!!!!!!!!!

I was really excited about this phone right up until the part about EDGE-only in the U.S. How depressing. My most anticipated device purchase of the year has been ruined.

By the time it makes it to the states, they may swap the physical radio to make sure it connects to the right frequency for US bound 3G. I can't see them bringing a phone that is so ahead technologically without the proper hardware for 3G.

If not, I'll have to hope that the HTC Thoth has a front mic, unlike the Athena. That one would be just about as cool.

How is that thing free with a 2 year plan? Wish we could get that in the states.

I wish I knew someone across the pond that could help me import one of those bad boys.

lack of physical d-pad turns me away - touch is nice and all but sometimes u just want buttons

I wonder when it will come to Australia...if ever.

It's a nice looking phone, I saw a video where the transitions took a bit more time than I expected, so this wonderfully edited video probably avoided showing those... It's definitely a unique remedy to the aging WinMo 6.1 UI issue(s)...

Very disappointed by the lack of American 3g, but as mentioned by another poster it may get a radio upgrade. I am also not impressed with the meager 3mp camera and the inadequate battery.
This phone shot to the top of my list when I first heard about it, but now I am not as enthralled with it.

...I never understood how they UK gets soooo much better contract deals than we do, it's a 2-year contract, the same as AT&T over here? How come they're subsidized so much more...

Orange phones are successfully completed without being cut off prematurely, compared with calls made on other uk digital mobile phone networks.
