Well look what dropped in our mailbox.  Some images and deets on the upcoming Verizon Diamond 2 (aka 'Whitestone' aka XV6975), the HTC Mega and a bit of an update to the Tachi image.

First up is the Verizon Diamond 2/Whitestone device, picture above. We're hearing a Sept/October release window is the goal for Big Red.  The specs will be as follow:

  • WM6.1 (no WM6.5 on launch?)
  • Qualcomm 7600 @ 528MHz
  • 512MB ROM/256MB RAM
  • 3.6-inch WVGA touchscreen
  • 5-megapixel autofocus camera/Anti-handshaking
  • gpsOne (aGPS and full GPS)
  • GSM/CDMA World phone

We have to say that although the body of the Diamond 2 here looks a bit ... different ... those are some killer specs for a non-keyboard device. Kudos to you, Verizon, with this and the Ozone.

Check out the Mega and Tachi after the break ...

HTC Mega

Up till now, not too much has been known about the HTC Mega outside of having some new TouchFlo 2D goodness and low-range specs. First, to the right you can see what she'll actually look like for the first time.  Next, here are the numbers:

  • WM6.5
  • Qualcomm 7225@ 528 MHz
  • 256MB ROM/256MB RAM
  • 2.8-inch QVGA (240x320)
  • GSM/GPRS Edge/HSDPA
  • 3-megapixel fixed-focus camera
  • gpsOne

Certainly not earth-shattering by any means, but this device is obviously to fill the low-end of the market.  Still, not too shabby for the bottom these days.

Finally, though we're not expecting the Tachi here in the U.S., this pic is every so slightly updated from the previous version.  Mostly the center d-pad area is less chrome-y. Yay.

any indication on what the button in the center is for??

HTC has been favoring a five-button front lately (On the D2 the phone disconnect button doubles up). Usually the "fifth" key functions as Home for the TouchFlo UI, but the function may very based on context.

This would definitely throw in a bone if it was coming to Sprint because as much as I want and will probably get the TP2 the specs on this look pretty impressive minus the fact that from what I'm understanding the ROM is still behind the times. That is if the other posts I've been reading on some of the Samsung phones are correct. Still this is one heck of a sexy looking phone.

Oops, forgot to mention that I was specifically referring to the Diamond 2 since there's three beauty's listed.

Any HTC devices coming to at&t soon?

The Whitestone and diamond 2 are two different phones. The whitestone has the 3.6 screen, kickstand and no Qwerty board. The Diamond 2 is thinner with 3.2 screen. So i'm confussed on the first pic. Which on is it ? Or did they combine the two to make one phone for Verizon ?

Since this is a GSM/CDMA phone per specs listed, Can this phone work on T-mobile service?

I think the middle button on the Verizon phone is an optical "button" like the current Samsung Omnia has. I could be wrong though.

No, the button as a TV symbol on it.

In the last couple of podcasts, the staff talked about how Verizon is going to "really go all in with Windows Mobile". I must say, I had my doubts, but if they manage to bring this stuff to the table (regardless of how late it will be), it's going to go well for them

the more i look at specs as well as the 09 roadmap leak from the begining of the year, it basically confirms this is the whitestone NOT the diamond 2 (topaz). now verizon may call it the diamond 2 but its a completly different device that the diamond 2's that are running around Europe right now

Where's the wifi?

For those of you who are complaining that the Diamond and Whitestone are different, I think that may be why they said "Verizon Diamond 2" instead of just "Diamond 2"

Yeah looks like it is just a big diamond 2. (3.6")

The Whitestone is a TP2 without the keyboard. That's better than the Diamond2, but still unimpressive.

Correct, and a hell-of alot lighter in weight too. TP2 is nice but it's like carrying around a brick in your pants,LOL.

It's thinner then the Kaiser and a little longer, so it's not a big brick.

I never really noticed that. Good call!

Argh, a TP2 without the keyboard is exactly what I want. Any indications Sprint will get this phone?

Another new body , OLD cpu from htc.

So the Verizon Diamond 2 is really a customized CDMA Touch HD. I'm not sure why they threw the "Diamond" moniker in there since it doesn't fit with the HTC lineup and only confuses; probably something to do with Verizon branded marketing.

Being descended from the HD is a good thing, I certainly like mine. However, I wish Verizon had opted to keep the 3.5mm audio jack. The standard HTC camera platform: 5Mpixel, no flash, and no VR is woefully out of date. VR on the VD2 is a welcome improvement but I suspect it's software only, so don't expect much improvement. The biggest disappointment is that the VD2 utilizes the Qualcomm MSM72xxx platform. With Snapdragon now available to handset manufactures, 72xxx is looking a bit dated. I would have preferred to see the VD2 based on the upcoming Leo.

Hardware-wise the VD2 isn't quite up to the standard set by the Touch HD from which it was derived. However, if I was a Verizon customer and assuming that Verizon doesn't monkey too much with the OS and makes an optional upgrade to 6.5 available at some point, I'd want one of these.

It looks like a hot-rodded Whitestone to me. I'll bet it does have the 3.5mm jack since their including it on their new TP2 thats coming out soon as well.

What are you talking about? Did you read the specs for the Whitestone:

Qualcomm 7600 @ 528MHz

That's not the "Qualcomm MSM72xxx platform" you spend over half your post dissing.

Still the same cruddy 2007 ARM11 cpu core

Argh, a TP2 without the keyboard is exactly what I want. Any indications Sprint will get this phone?

+1

I'd love to see this on Sprint so that I don't feel the need to buy an iPod Touch.

I like it better then the Touch Pro 2 if Sprint gets it I will be looking hard into getting one I just wish HTC would get away from the WVGA touchscreen. The TFT capacitive touchscreen devices like the Palm Pre have much more finger friendly screen. I like the higher resolution but I hate having to use a Stylus to navigate.

It is ambiguous whether they're talking 2 phones for the "Diamond 2", one with 3.2" screen and one with 3.6". Once they settled on the 3.6" size for the TP2, it didn't make much sense to keep 3.2". Either way, this generation is evolved more from the HD. Updating the processor sounds like next year's cycle and the following year upgrading to 4G network capability. I'm just hoping they release these Sept Oct at a price point under $200. Then we'll be in line to upgrade to 4G in 2 years. We've held onto the Moto Q an extra year waiting for these products to "mature."

I wish they would make a GSM version as well so it can be used on T-mobile. That would be a great option besides the overpriced TP2.
