Just when you were ready to hear the end of life rumors concerning the Motorola Q Series come true, someone throws you a curve ball. Verizon Wireless has announced that it will be re-releasing the Motorola Q9c. [via EverythingQ] The re-release brings the company's TALKS feature to the phone. Everything else appears unchanged.

TALKS for Verizon is designed to assist blind and visually impaired customers.  It is a screen reader that adds speech to the standard user interface by using Windows Mobile to convert text displayed on the handset to highly intelligible speech. Additionally, TALKS will allow users to dial contacts, add/edit contact entries, compose email, write documents in Mobile Office, and use Mobile Explorer through voice commands.

Does this mean that we may actually see the Q line continue with the Q11? Or maybe even the Napolean? Or is the Motorola Q9c simply a convenient test model for the TALKS application? Regardless of what all of this means, it's nice to see the Motorola Q line still hanging around.

that's odd why would they re-release this model with just a new piece of software on it. I would never consider this phone seeing it is not EVDO Rev. A, especially for that price tag of 249 dollars, seems a bit much for something so out-dated. Leave it to Verizon to do such weird things, why they didn't release this TALKS software on something new say a Treo Pro one will never know.

One reason they choose the Motorola Q9 might be because of its speaker. If your going to pitch this for hearing impaired and blind customers, a quality speaker is a must and the Moto Q's speaker ain't shabby.

I think the reason why TALKS was released with the Moto Q9 is because of the keyboard. Blind people can't use a touch (or mouse-based) interface because they can't see what they are touching (hence why the iPhone and all its imitators are so anti-blind). Given that blind users will end up using the keyboard for most if not all of their input, it was wise to release TALKS with a device that has such a comfortable-to-type-on keyboard.

Now, I really wished Nuance would release TALKS for all WinMo Standard phones, not just the CDMA Q9. Why are blind people forced to put up with the overpriced service and feature-crippling attitude of Verizon? Why can't Nuance sell just the TALKS software so users can buy it for their Sprint and AT&T's Moto Q9 variants, as well as Samsung ACE and BlackJacks, Pantech Duo and Matrix Pro, T-Mobile Dash and Shadows, XV5800 and the beauty of unlocked and carrier-unbranded models like the BenQ E72 and HTC S743?

Anybody know when start marketing?

Apparently this is not available via the business channels...only consumer accounts. That's the word I got today anyway.

Frankly, I'm grateful that finally Verizon has seen the light & released something competitive. The gimicky software in the LG line of phones is barely useful. The built in software will read main menus & the keys you type but will not read some of the submenus & will not read anything on the web. I have been a Verizon customer for 10 years+ & have been happy with their service & coverage; however was feeling as if I would be forced to change carriers in order to attempt to keep up with the technology. Our phones do more than make calls these days. We as blind people shouldn't be backed in to a corner & told what is good for us. We deserve the same technological choices as our sighted counterparts.

Has anyone actually tried to order the moto q9c with talks? Every time I do a search for the phone and click buy now, I get a message that says not available at this time. No one at verizon seems to know how to get this order processed.

I have tried to order the Moto Q9c with TALKS, and get the same response,, "It's out of Stalk." I even called their business center, and they no nothing about it. I've tried to work with customer care and sells, and nothing was accomplished, for over an hour.
I was happy to hear about this new release. Why would they come out with this and immediately have the phone out of stalk? I don't understand that. Makes me quite angry.
I'm tired of the lg phones only reading a limited amount of options.

I am disappointed with vzw. My wife and I visited one of their store last night to find out about the program and no one had any idea about it. My contract is up and I'd like to stay with vzw, but they just don't seem to care about low vision/blind individuals. I gave vzw first crack at retaining my business (we've been with them since the mid-90s when it was Bell Atlantic Mobile,) but I'm going to have to shop around for something that works for me. I've felt like I was at a disadvantage for the past couple of years, not being able to text or read email while away from my business. I've heard/read some good reviews for the iPhone 3Gs, so that is next on my list. I'll post a review on my blog at www.ICantCU.com.
