Video Review: nanoGroove GrooveShark client

Posted on Tuesday, Jan 26, 2010 by Malatesta

GrooveShark, the streaming music on-demand site, is still going strong and while we've had a Windows phone client in the past (see our video review of GrooveFish), it was lacking some finesse and advanced features.

Enter nanoGroove, a full-fledged (though not officially endorsed) GrooveShark client that adds some nice bells and whistles. Although it costs a one-time license of $4.99, we think it's a fair price for a nicely polished application such as this.

Here are some of the features which it's free GrooveFish cousin is lacking

  • Supports multiple resolutions (including 320x320)
  • GrooveShark Playlist support
  • Album art
  • Power button disables screen (keeps music playing, saves battery)
  • Better graphics

We've had no problem running it on our Touch Pro 2 or Treo Pro and of course you can't beat the sound quality of GrooveShark (it kills Pandora in that regard).

If we had any complaints it would be that the UI has a few extra steps than is probably needed (like having to refresh to pull down your playlists) and it is a little confusing to get songs to actually just play (first you search, then you add to the player, then you switch to player, then you  hit play).

But overall we're very happy with it and have no problem surrendering $5 for it. If you want the time-limited demo, just scan the MS Tag or go to the NanoGroove site.

Check out our video review after the jump to see how it all works!

The UIs pretty, but the interaction's definitely a little clunky. I was trying to figure out why nothing was playing until I realized you had to load the player with your playlist (and this apparently has to be done song-by-song.) Hopefully they can get that changed in the future where you just click a playlist and it starts playing (along with a randomizer.)

I'll definitely throw $5 his way as this is work worthy of supporting with a lot of promise if he can just get a few wrinkles ironed out.

this is an awesome app. One easter egg though.. If after you play a song... check in your storage card .. there will be a mp3 file.. by the name of "groovy" . it is the same song that u just played...
:)

Can't get it to initialize on my Sprint Touch Pro2. Wonder if it's due to me running MightyROM 6.5...

Unlikely that it's a MightyROM problem -- I am running it on the TP2 with MightyROM 6.5 01.20 release and it's perfect. Maybe something else you have installed breaks it? I know Mighty Mike himself had problems making it work over 3G in Canada, but it worked for him over WiFi. Maybe try that as a first troubleshooting step?

Since my HTC Touch Pro (VZW Ver) did not include an FM Radio, I have searched and searched for some kind of way to listen to music (besides my personal collection of MP3's) on my device. I have tried so many online music players eg...GrooveShark...Groovefish, and others. Some failed eventually and the others didn't fit the bill.
I do beleive nanoGroove will be the one I can rely on and enjoy!

I just downloaded it for my Verizon Omnia so I'll let you know how it works on 6.1. Looks intuitive.

Why paying five bugs, when a free alternative exists call "SciLor's GrooveMobile"?
