Windows Mobile 6.5 tool kit is released

In another sure sign that we're marching steadily toward the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5, Microsoft has released the Software Developer Tool Kit, also known as an SDK. From Microsoft's overview:

The Windows Mobile 6.5 Developer Tool Kit adds documentation, sample code, header and library files, emulator images and tools to Visual Studio that let you build applications for Windows Mobile 6.5. ... The Windows Mobile 6 SDK must also be installed in order to use any of the Windows Mobile 6.5 Gesture API or samples.

From what we understand, coding for Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't vastly different than coding for 6.1, so there shouldn't be anything too earth-shattering here. But it does include APIs for gestures -- think flicking and scrolling -- which is new in Windows Mobile 6.5.

The SDK is available in a half-dozen languages, and there are separate builds for touchscreen and non-touchscreen devices. You can download them here.

Update: The WMDev team learns us on Twitter that this is just the 6.5 developer tool kit and you still have to have the full 6.0 SDK.

Just like I suspected, in a desperate and pointless attempt to scream "I can be an iPhone too", Windows Mobile 6.5 brings NOTHING new to the table for non-touchscreen users. OK, there is IE6, which I don't think is a real improvement over the previous one. There is also the marketplace and MyPhone. If I'm not mistaken, MyPhone is already available to users with WM 6.1.

So don't expect expanded functionality on the already-crippled Office Mobile and File Explorer. Don't expect bug fixes or usability enhancements.

Now I can't care less if Samsung keeps their promise of a WM 6.5 upgrade for the Jack, because WM 6.1 is as good as it'll get for non-touchscreen devices. Bumping up the version number in the About dialog and a marketplace program are not good enough reasons to call this an OS upgrade. Thanks for nothing, Microsoft!

OK, how about you just grow up a little?

Many of here like this and will be happy using it. WM 7 is the big change, and we are well aware that this is only a step till that is released. That is what they said, and that is what was delivered.

But dont let us get in the way of your man-tantrum. Apparently you never paid attention to what 6.5 was about, or your reading comprehension is as lousy as your attitude.

Did they fix any of the options for reoccuring appts in WinMo Standard 6.5???

Seriously, MS bailed on Standard right as they got it to the point of a serious Blackberry competitor. Blinded by Apple envy.

After using WinMo 6.5 on my touch diamond for the last 3 months, im getting a Pre on Saturday. I've had enough of this same old crap since WinMo 5 really.
