Power Radio Main ScreenPower Radio Pop-up Menus

The creative collective over at XDA Developers, namely member 6Fg8, has come up with a Power Radio Application with RDS support for the HTC Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch HD, Xperia X1, Touch Pro 2 and Diamond 2 phones. RDS support is basically the ability to small amounts of digital information embedded in conventional FM radio broadcasts. It gives you the ability to display information about the broadcasts, traffic announcements, programming information, and other tid bits on your radio's display.

Power Radio covers three broad radio ranges; CCR (87.5-108.0 Mhz), Japan (76.0-91.0) and World (76.0-108.0 Mhz) with the ability to preset fifteen channels. Menus are accessible by pressing and holding on-screen control buttons. The command list is fairly simply and as follows:

  • manual scan: long-press "scan" button to get context menu with various options
  • preset buttons: long-press a button to get context menu with options for store, delete, rename
  • ear/spk: switch between earphones and speaker
  • mute/unmute: self explanatory
  • blend: improves stereo reception and/or expands stereo base
  • stereo: switch between mono/stereo

You will still need to use your headphones with this radio application (serves as an antenna) and in using Power Radio on the AT&T Fuze the channels picked up nicely.  The RDS messages were a nice addition as well.  I just have to figure out a way to get signal reception from my basement, windowless office.

If you're looking for an alternative to the basic FM radio, Power Radio is worth a try.

George, please tell me you weren't listening to Finebaum

I have to admit that I do listen from time to time. Personally, I prefer the Opening Drive which is the stations morning show.
Finebaum strikes me as very cynical. ROLL TIDE! :-P
He was a very good investigative reporter and columnist. Now he just very good at stirring the pot.

I'm all about Dunaway and Brown on 690. Unfortunately, that won't with this app. But it does stream just fine via Kinoma. :)

does this work with the sprint treo pro

I wouldn't see why not.
Actually, I don't think it will. Only the above listed devices have FM radio capability on the chipset. Treo Pro does not, so I can't see how this will work directly :-/
I'm sorry. You're right. I read it to ask if this would work on Sprints Touch Pro. Tired eyes playing tricks on me.

Does this work on Sprint Diamond or TP stock roms?
The HTC radio cab only works on "cooked" sprint roms.
I am looking for radio to work on non custom.

Any body Know if this "holy grail" for me!!!!

Versiom 1.3.2 is out now and works perfect on Raphael...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=531600

v1.3.2.0
- scan may be interrupted after start
- evaluate RDS checkwords
- optional PDA time sync when RDS time info arrives
- 50 kHz step tuning
- number of preset banks adjustable via GUI, expands automatically during scan if necessary
- process alternate frequency list
- option "sort presets" from menu
- disable all background work when screen is off, to reduce power consumption to minimum during idle
- font replace problem finally solved
v1.2.0.1
- bugfix when number of stations exceeds number of presets during scan
- initial scan after install is now optional (you will be asked)
v1.2.0.0
- "replaces font" bug partially fixed. While PowerRadio is running, font is still replaced. On exit font will be switched back
- volume bug on start fixed
- fixed volume display bug, bar never reached 100%
- version string added
- country settings are now evaluated
- allows user defined scan sensitivity
- skinning support: limited support is offered, for details see skinning.rtf
- more preset buttons: added a bank-switch feature which allows for 9 banks of 15 presets. Selected bank is displayed beneath the volumebars as "FMx". To switch between banks simply tap the area above the preset buttons. You have to edit PowerRadio.ini manually to set the desired number of banks. Find the line "NumberOfBanks=3" and change it to your desire. After that, PowerRadio must be restarted.
- waitcursors are added where it makes sense. There is no waitcursor on exit of PowerRadio, wait at least 10 secs. before attempting to start any program that uses the FM-radio.
- scan: all presets are cleared when initiating a scan, except locked presets. RDS station names are stored during scan. some stations have scrolling or switching names. this can lead to unpredictible results. anyway you can always edit a station name manually by long-click on a preset.
- presets can now be locked, which protects them from being overwritten during a scan.
- power management added: most of the background processes are terminated when device is on idle. this may however need improvement.
- accidentially hidden SIP will be restored
- BETA: support for wired headset button. Run "HeadsetButtonHandler" to install / uninstall this feature. When HeadsetButtonHandler is installed and PowerRadio is running, doubletap the headsetbutton skips to next preset. If PowerRadio is not running it executes the default action (usually redial last contact).
