We're not going to be able to give you the full rundown on the Xperia X1a right away, but trust us when we say we're pretty darn stoked. See, I'm here in San Francisco with Rene from The iPhone Blog to cover Macworld (that'll be live-blogged too.  Heck, I'm doing A TreoCentral Live Blog as well for the Palm announcement). We stopped by the Sony Style store and asked if they were selling the Xperia X1a yet.  Answer:

We had them before but they took them away for some reason.  But we just got two in on Saturday.  Let me ask if we're allowed to sell them, they said we could start on Monday but let me confirm.

867 dollars (after taxes) later, WMExperts proudly has an an X1a to show off.  We'll rock it around CES next week and generally give it some time to sink in before we present our thoughts in greater detail.  Meanwhile, we recommend you hit up your local Sony Style Store to see what they have.  Apparently, the X1a isn't the great white whale we were afraid it was

After the break getcher unboxing photos and a couple comparison shots with the HTC Fuze.

As much as I anticipated this, the TouchPro stole my heart... and in terms of looks, I don't like how much dead space there is between the screen and the top of the phone... Reminds me of an old HP PDA I believe... or maybe it was a ipaq

For all of Sony Ericsson's alleged design acumen, I can't get over how boring and ugly their home screen is on he X1. It looks like something Spb of SPSH designed, which isn't so much a knock on those excellent developers as it is on SE and their "premium device" gimmick.

Nice to know even in the heart of MacLand, DB finds a Windows Mobile nugget. Score!

I have to say that after everything, this device's lack of a flush screen really is troubling. I didn't think it would be such a big deal; but after some use, it really just makes the device less desirable. Maybe it was the year of anticipation, or the onslaught of alternate devices, or maybe it's the lack of panels at start despite the ample time given to prep the arrival; but this phone just isn't what I was expecting anymore. The panels aren't smooth enough. The camera is crap compared to the old SE W810.

With all the time SE spent on getting this phone to market, especially state side, I would've expected a far superior device. I can only hope that if they decide to breathe further life into the WM market with the Xperia line-up, they really bring something better to the table.

Can you confirm if the rumor that they added T-Mobile 3G is true???

It looks cheap in these photos compared to others, maybe it's just the silver color...and that home screen needs to go for sure.

I do prefer the Brushed Steel look. When it comes time for the review I'd like to hear comments on the speed of the UI with panels, which I've heard was laggy. And also how good the touchscreen is. I've heard the fuze has a great touchscreen as far as resistive screens go, I'm assuming the xperia is just as good coming from the same folks.

I'm working with a blackjack II now, if I get phone with a resistive touchscreen will my girlfriend (Ipod lover) laugh at me? Is capacitive that much easier, than the new phones from HTC, to use with your fingers?

The home screen is customizable...very customizable. The panels are not slow like in the prototype videos. I've had both the Silver and Black. Both are beautiful, but I prefer the black better. The touch screen is very sensitive and finger friendly. However, not all aspects of the UI is finger-friendly (fault Microsoft Windows Mobile, not Sony Ericsson). The music/video/picture apps, the radio and camera apps are all finger-friendly and there is plently of third party finger-friendly software available. There is also flick scrolling.

SE did come up short on panels. With all the waiting for the release of this device, one would expect more to be available. The device is very high-quality and not cheap feeling at all. The WVGA screen is amazing looking too, especially playing video.

Just found the X1 today at a Sony Style in Glendale, CA. I was underwhelmed overall, largely by the bulk of the device and the resistive touchscreen (less sensitive than the Touch Pro). But what really killed it for me was the keyboard, which is the single worst mobile keyboard I've ever used -- and I'm even fine with the Centro. The keys are too small and spaced too far apart, not to mention shallow.

And, of course, it didn't help that I saw it the day after the debut of the Pre.
