Yet Another Zune Phone Rumor (Updated)

Just when you think the rumors of a possible Microsoft Zune phone has faded into the sunset, another one surfaces. This round can be credited to a Twitter update from the Microsoft Office 2010 team that hints "June 2009 will be an important month for Zune lovers." This alone is a fairly innocent statement and could simply mean a new Zune player could be launched.  As for why it's the Office 2010 team that is dropping hints, we can't say.

It's the second update on the same Twitter page that complicates things. The update simply states, "New product launch, that's all I'm allowed to say. Hold off from buying an iPhone/Pre." The iPhone and the Pre are obviously smartphones, so it's tempting to put the Zune Phone back into the rumor mix.  Us, though, we're remembering how strenuously Microsoft has denied rumors of being in the hardware business and of the Zune Phone specifically.  So whatever it is, we're not expecting a 180 on this one (but a 360, or more specifically something to do with Xbox 360, doesn't seem crazy).

Regardless, June will be here before you know it and absent a "launch delay" we will all find out soon enough what's up Microsoft's sleeve.

Update: Yeah, NO.  Per Engadget, the tweets are not legit.  What, you thought a rumor with the words "Zune" and "Phone" within shouting distance of each other would actually pan out?

Yea, it will not be a Microsoft phone; but I'm hoping that it will be the HTC Star running WM 6.5 (upgradable to WM 7) and Zune with a 3.5m jack on the Sprint network.

this comment melts my heart :)
that superstar is going to be amazing!!!
with the tegra!
hopefully capacitive screen!
I LUST!

For all the open mocking a lot of tech bloggers love to throw at the Zune, they sure do love the Zune phone rumors. I think the eventual Zune integration with the phone platform (at the very least on WM and potentially on a dedicated device) is an obvious no-brainer that's going to happen.

If they made it backward compatible with existing WM devices and gave more people the chance to try it out they'd see how fantastic the service is and be a lot less likely to lose people to other devices due to lack of good integrated multimedia capabilities.

My question is, why is it that juicy stuff is always coming soon, later, next month, Q3, Q4 etc? Why doesnt anyone just come out with the good stuff NOW?! :)

Because it takes time to plan and execute?

I'm sure it does, I was just joking.

Probably won't have to wait long, E3 kicks off June 2nd. Keep your eyes on the MS keynote.

It's the ZuneHD that's coming in June, not a Zune phone: http://blogs.zdnet.com/gadgetreviews/?p=4162&tag=nl.e539

My gut has been telling me that WinMo 6.5 is a red herring.

That's what I would do if I were in charge of the Mobile devices division... put 25 programmers to work on refitting the current product in order to throw a curve ball and take the attention off of the actual work in progress.

I'm probably just a tinfoil hat though.

Can you use a WM device with Zune software/tracks? I use my WM device for my music so I dont really need a dedicated device.

If they made it backward compatible with existing WM devices and gave more people the chance to try it out they'd see how fantastic the service

i like tis device)very cool
