Your Project Pink/WinMo 7 rumor du jour

Microsoft's Project Pink

OK, it's been a little while since we discussed "Project Pink," the project that Microsoft swears isn't a Zune phone, isn't (necessarily) Windows Mobile 7 and might or might not have anything to do with that punky pop singer. (OK, we made that last part up.)

Here's the latest breakdown by ZDNet's Mary-Jo Foley:

  • Pink has an ad rep in the form of McCann Erickson, which also handles advertising for Windows Mobile. (Or not, depending on your view of things.)
  • Pink will be based on Windows Mobile 7 but won't look like the Windows Mobile 7 most of us are expecting.
  • Windows Mobile 7 should ship to OEMs about the time that WinMo 6.5 phones go to market. (We've seen that leaked and heard it from other sources, too.)
  • Pink's starting to sound somewhat like a tangential device, a la the Sidekick, and may have elements of the Zune, My Phone and Windows Marketplace for Mobile all wrapped into it. Motorola and Sharp have been rumored as manufacturers.

As for our take? Pink is still a genius codename in that we sound ridiculous repeating it over and over. Oh, and that whole Sidekick-esque thing could well be a pretty good bet. If it's given the proper UI (and WM7 for the rest of us better have one, too), and Microsoft throws some smart marketing behind it (and they seem to be doing OK with Bing), then Pink could well have a good shot at gobbling up some market share.

it sounds like it could be some sort of average consumer oriented winmo 7. It could have a fancy shell, be based off of winmo, but dummed down, it could be an iphone/pre competitor

I've been thinking for awhile now that we're basically going to see two flavors of mobile offerings from MS. One as a continuation of WM, albeit more UI-friendly and possibly re-written to the core that's available to multiple hardware partners. And then another based on the same guts (the one more people are fixated on) but limited to only a couple partners that's intended for consumers with a decided multimedia/gaming bent. The latter would still no doubt be able to do all the basics you'd expect from a smartphone-level device (email, surfing, etc) but obviously have much more mainstream appeal.

The latter is no doubt why Danger was bought. If you just look at the Sidekick it just SCREAMS gaming. And MS has been curiously absent from that MASSIVE space thus far. Granted, the hardware could change some, but I think MS clearly saw a model with the Sidekick that would be an ideal platform for their entry into the mobile gaming space (both as a standalone device as well as on the phone front.) Either the Zune brand will morph into the Xbox portable compliment or they'll come up with some other name leveraging the Xbox's brand strength. Either way, even as a business user I'd still be all over a phone that offers Zune-like multimedia, Xbox-portable level gaming while still allowing me to keep tabs on email, etc.

I personally think/hope Pink is going to be a portable Xbox. I don't know how/if MS would integrate a phone into it because I can't see it being an exclusive, yet it's hard to imagine being available for every carrier (or at least an unlocked GSM and a few CDMA varients).

This "Pink" thing is very confusing and mysterious, and in the end, we will probably all be disappointed... Then again, this could be MS's Natal for E3 or CES next year ;)

I am not happy after looking a pink as it won't look like the Windows Mobile 7 most of us are expecting.really disappointing but i like only a one thing about it that Pink has an ad rep in the form of McCann Erickson.may be good .

I hope pink is the ZuneHD as a phone. The zune's OS is CE based... could be WM7.

If they really thought about it both the Iphone and the sidekick are multimedia devices with a strong hook in social networking apps. maybe the name of the product should leverage that.

Now bear with me, if these are multimedia devices what are the media?. not gaming(xbox); music-pictures and vieos(zune): then social media.(----)
the I in imac , ipod, iphone, itunes tells consmers what to expect, and that they work together.
I think the pink phone should focus on social aggregation complete with xbox like avatars and given a name starting with Y
so we will have x for the xbox, y for the pink phone (Y'all... i dunno) and z for the zune. and all these services will also be available on their windows mobile phone, with W for windows, or hell even work

W,X,Y,Z.... a full mobile solution... it will be hard for any one to compete with that.
